Welcome back to Ask The Geek! This week the geek covers .avi files that won't play and wireless networking with Windows CE handhelds.
Q: Dear Mr. Geek, I have an .avi file that won't play. What do I do?
A: Well, I'm going to go on a limb and assume that you have other .avi files that will play. There are two possible answers to your problem. One could be that the file is corrupted. The other, more likely answer is that your file is actually a Divx encoded file. To view Divx encoded files, you need a divx player (I suggest Divx Player 2.0 Alpha from Download.com), or you can download and install the new Windows Media Player 9, which now has the ability to play Divx movies. Good Luck!
Q: Hey Kevin this is Aaron. I was wondering if it is possible to have a PDA with an 802.11B card connect to the internet wirelessly, only using a desktop with a wireless network card, (the computer is only connected to the internet through a ethernet cable and cable modem).
A: As you have already learned, you can set up wireless 802.11b/g networks without using an 802.11b/g base station. Your idea, if I understand you correctly, is to use internet connection sharing on the host (desktop Windows) machine, and be able to use the internet wirelessly on a new handheld. Here is what I know. D-Link, my favorite 802.11x company, is soon releasing an 802.11b card that fits into a CF type 1 slot. Any handheld that will accept a CF card should be able to use this card. The minimum requirements for this card are a CF slot and CE 3.0 or PocketPC 2002. There are other cards available, and your actual battery life and transmission distance will vary from the "norms" of desktop 802.11x cards. In your further communications with me you have mentioned buying a new Dell Axim. I would suggest calling Dell, and asking the Axim tech support folks what they know and suggest, as they will know the machine well.
Well folks, that's all for this week! Remember to send your questions in, or post them in the feedback below, so that we can answer them for you! Until next week, happy computing!
