Hockey is by far the greatest sport in the world. It
combines agility, skill, and pure raw aggression all into one game. I have
followed hockey since I was a young lad. During that time I have followed one
team through thick and thin, the wins and the losses, the trades and the
gains. This is an article on the Whim Sports Page dedicated to that team: The
Washington Capitals.
I shall use this article to give out information on the Caps: how they are
doing, my thoughts on what they should be doing, and any other interesting
news. While I will also be mentioning other hockey teams and the whole sport
of hockey in general, this is a column for the Caps, about the Caps, following
the Caps, and if you didn't get the idea before: This is a section for the
Washington Capitals. DC teams get a lot of crap from sporting fans
everywhere. While I agree our basketball team is a complete joke, there is a
parade of monkeys over on our football team, and no one pays too much attention
to soccer, the Caps are DC's strongest sports team. Mark my words; the time is
coming when the Caps will turn up and bite everyone on the ass. I can¹t wait.
But let's go to the article, shall we?
Washington Capitals and New York Rangers hitting the ice.
I had the privilege of attending a Caps game last weekend. On January 26th I
went to the game against the New York Rangers at the MCI Center in DC. This
was gearing to be a hot game. The last time these two teams met the Rangers
edged the Caps 2-1 so the Caps were certainly out for revenge. Plus, over the
past two years a violent rivalry has been slowly building between these two
teams.
The game started, and not even 51 seconds into the game did a fight break out
and gave the Rangers a five minute power play. However, the Rangers could not
capitalize on the four on five man advantage. A little later on a Caps power
play, Robert Lang plugged in the first goal of the day for the Caps. After
that, it was all she wrote for the Rangers. The Rangers seemingly never got
their game together and soon it became a shooting gallery for the Caps. By the
end of the first period, it was 2-0 Capitals, thanks to a Calle Johansson goal,
and only seconds into the second quarter Kip Miller scored another goal on a
power play to make it 3-0. The Rangers then rallied together and actually
played like a solid hockey team for the rest of the second quarter, nearly
dominating the Caps, but they could only get one shot past Washington goalie
Olie Kolzig. By the end of the second quarter it was 3-1. The final period
started and any hope the Rangers had was destroyed as the Capitals came out and
slaughtered New York. Another goal by Lang followed by Jaromir Jagr, Peter
Bondra, and Sergei Gonchar sealed the deal for the Caps and made them winners 7-
2 over the New York Rangers. The win puts the Caps five points over Tampa Bay
and continues to keep the Caps on top of the Southeast Division.
The legendary Olaf Kolig, ladies and gentleman. "Godzilla" was in the net and made some great saves.
The main problem for the Rangers was injuries and penalties. Rangers had a
huge amount of players out of this game including their netminder, Mike
Richter, who is out for the season with a concussion of epic proportions. The
Caps not only played hockey physically but mentally as well. The bad blood
between these teams has been brewing and is shaping up into quite a rivalry.
The Caps played smashmouth hockey causing the Rangers to lose tempers, make
mistakes, and make fights which ended with New York gaining 89 minutes in the
box. There must have been at least five or six huge fights and this gave the
Caps nine power play opportunities.
The Capitals played all around great hockey. I was very impressed with right
wing Mike Grier. He was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in October of '02
and has slowly been improving. He is a bit timid out on the ice right now but
with a little more confidence, aggressiveness, and better puck handling, he
could really break out. Interesting note about Grier: He is one of two African
American Washington Capitals. The other African American player on the Caps is
Jason Doig, who is also a rising player on the team and tough as nails as he
was in many of the fights during the game.
Take a look below to see how the Caps fared this past week and also take a look
at the pics that I took during the game. I would love all your input,
questions, comments, and Caps love. Just put it in the feedback below. Until
next time, keep watching the Caps give Capital Punishment to the rest of those
pansy hockey teams. GO CAPS!

MCI Center, Washington D.C. The battleground of the greats.
One of the many brawls the Caps and Rangers had. This one put 3 Rangers in the box.
Some old lady was throwing peanut shells right next to my drink.
The doofiest caps fan in the world.
Check out these Ranger penalty minutes! It was insane!

Good question. The Red Wings are no doubt a powerful team and defeated the Caps in the Stanley Cup a few years ago. I think it would be tough for the Caps to take out the Wings but over the past few years they have been finding success. I think the Caps can beat the Wings as long as they play smart, keep out of the P. Box, stay healthy, and have that, "Screw this, I don't care what this team has done or won, WE ARE GOING TO BEAT THEM!" attitude.
