Sleater-Kinney keeps getting better and better. "One Beat" is another victory for the trio. They're maturing with grace.
Corin Tucker no longer screams everything, but has developed a powerful voice. Her guitar playing, as well as Carrie Brownstien's, has imporved a lot since the days of "Call the Doctor." Songs like "Faraway," "The Remainder," and "Light Rail Coyote" work off loose guitar grooves, so much so that "Light Rail Coyote" sounds more like classic rock than punk!
Also, the band has the smarts to take risks. They continue to experiment with adding other instruments to their sound. A baroque section is used for the bridge of "the Remainder," brass adorns the upbeat "Step Aside," and the group makes effective use of synthisizers throughout the album.
During an era when music is polished for the masses, Sleater-Kinney continues to demonstrate the right way to do it. Through hard work and perserverence the trio has released a series of acclaimed albums and have been a constant presence on the indie-rock scene for eight years. Many of the songs on "One Beat" concern themselves with the post-9/11 climate, demonstrating that Sleater-Kinney has the ability to mature in ways that most artists can't. They are a prime example of success earned on their own terms.
