"Gangs of New York" takes place in the late 1800s in the middle of the city that never sleeps. This was also around the time a ton of immigrants (mostly Irish) were coming through the harbors of New York and a large portion of the city's population consisted of "foreigners." With so many people in the city and most of them having nothing to their names, it was always a good idea to join a gang for a sense of belonging and, most importantly, protection.

Amsterdam Vallon, played by Leonardo DiCaprio (yes, I said DiCaprio), is an Irish immigrant hated by most because he's foreign and Catholic. In his early childhood, his father, a priest, was killed in battle against the Natives. Amsterdam was then sent to a private boarding school until he was released at around 17 or 18 years of age. He eventually goes back to the streets where he was raised and finds the man who is the killer of his father. To simply put it, a friendship is made and then a friendship is betrayed. It's an awesome story of family honor, revenge, and freedom.

"Gangs of New York" excellently portrays the underground view of the gangs that existed and the types of people in that society as well. Also, a very realistic view of the persecution of Irish Catholics plays a strong part. The cinematography and overall direction was very impressive and captivating. However, if you're not into rather gory movies this may turn your stomach at times. The fight/battle scenes take on a different viewpoint than today's typical action movies. If you have ever seen any of the old "Mad Max" movies with Mel Gibson, you would find some similarity in "Gangs of New York."

A few little side notes I really didn't mention: Cameron Diaz is in here, for you guys. Daniel Day-Lewis does a superb job as the "villain." Oh, and I love New York. If you like New York City, fighting with fists and blades, topless women, old Irish history, the Civil War, and anything that may have occurred during the late 1800s, this movie is a must-see!
