I'm always looking to rent a movie that may be a little off of the wall. You know, something that is not so mainstream and not even a major motion picture. After reading the backs of several rental cases and carefully choosing my next victim, I picked up "Ash Wednesday" with no regrets.

"Ash Wednesday," an IFC (Independent Film Company) production, takes place in Hell's Kitchen (circa 1980), which is one of the roughest neighborhoods of New York. It's Ash Wednesday, a Catholic holy day to celebrate the beginning of Lent, and a few thugs are about to "take out" some dirtbag who's causing them problems. Sean Sullivan (played by Elijah Wood) overhears the conversation and busts a cap in all of their rear ends before they even have a chance to scratch their noses.

Three years later on Ash Wednesday, Sean's brother, Fran (played by Edward Burns), is informed of something fishy going on around town and a lot of people aren't liking it. It's up to him to figure things out, for his sake and his brother's as well.

While the plot I've described might make this movie seem shallow, do not be discouraged. After all, there is only so much I can reveal without ruining it. "Ash Wednesday" is mysterious, a bit thrilling, and just plain cool all at the same time.

The directing was excellent, which was also done by Edward Burns himself. All of the acting was nothing less than great, especially for an independent film. I expected Elijah Wood to appear in the movie a little more, but I guess his character didn't really call for that. In addition to the visuals, the soundtrack was interesting, smooth and funky. I thoroughly enjoyed nodding my head to the beaty piano music in between each scene transition.

Rent "Ash Wednesday" on your next trip to your local movie rental store. You will not be let down if you're into dark drama, mystery, and gun-toting thugs.
