Family Weekend: Yay!
Jonelle Thackston | Executive Assistant
The best thing about Family Weekend is the family. I
love it when my parents come to visit. I actually get to eat real food. When
my parents come to visit I get treated everywhere. If I want Chinese for lunch,
no scrounging through the couch for loose change. My parents are here. While
they're here, they take me shopping. There is nothing like a ritual trip to
Wal-Mart, and with parents here, do not clip coupons. Hell, do not even look at
the prices. Just throw whatever you need into the cart. And before they go, my
dad gives me a hug and slips a couple twenties in my back pocket. If only they
visited more often, I would never have money troubles! Then again if they did
come more often then seeing me would not be such a big deal and giving me so
much... well, they just wouldn’t do it. I would not even appreciate it as much if
it was every weekend. In addition, having my parents come means I must
clean my house. This is something I put off doing until the day before they
arrive. But I always leave one small mess somewhere, like a ring around
the tub. This is a great transition for needing to go to Wal-Mart for cleaning
supplies, among other things. All this is why I love Family Weekend. It is a
once a year event that leaves my parents feeling guilty if they don’t come and
is sparingly enough that I get more than spoiled for 48 hours straight. Also,
Family Weekend actually offers more than an excuse to get fed and paid. It has
events. For example I would never go to the school play if my parents did not
want to. Them coming gives me an excuse to take advantage of something that
claims to be free but most likely came out of my ever-increasing tuition that I
would have to pay whether I went to the play or not. Also there is that free
barbecue on campus, A.K.A. free food! In the end all this rambling comes
down to I love family weekend because it feeds me, pays me, cleans me,
cultures me, and allows me to get more for my money, not to mention I really
love seeing my parents.
