Kingdom Hearts for the Sony Playstation 2
  Matt Butler | Staff Writer

Kingdom Hearts, Squaresoft's latest effort, features over 100 characters from various Disney movies, as well as characters from their best-selling Final Fantasy series. The story is as follows: You take control of Sora, a 14 year old boy that lives on the Destiny Islands with his friends Riku and Kaira. He has recurring visions of a "darkness" enveloping the island. Far off in the Magic Kingdom, King Mickey (Mouse, of course) notices that stars are fading out of the sky, so he goes off to investigate. While Goofy and Donald set off to find their missing King, Sora's island is attacked by creatures known as "The Heartless." This marks the beginning of Sora's journey into the unknown.

Sora's travels will take him to many worlds, all based on movies such as "Peter Pan," "Aladdin," "Nightmare Before Christmas," and "Beauty and The Beast." Traveling between these worlds, however, is where the game falls short. You must fly from world to world on an incredibly stupid looking ship made of gummi bear pieces. Thankfully, the rest of the game makes up for this shortcoming. With voice acting from your favorite Disney actors, as well as some pop-culture icons (Mandy Moore, Lance Bass, Haley Joel Osment), and an innovative real-time battle system, you can't go wrong with Kingdom Hearts. Ok, I'll give them credit, at least it's not another big-guns-first-person-massacre type of game, but Disney and Squaresoft?

the whole game was disney's idea, actually. also, while i think it's a fairly radical departure from square's normal fare, it's still one helluva game.

Good review. I wonder how they got Disney to cough up the rights?
