Ask The Geek Season 2, Ninth Edition
Kevin Martin | Tech Section Manager

Howdy, everyone! This week the Geek finds an old version of Real Jukebox and answers a questions about machine specifications.

Q: I lost Real Jukebox when I formatted and reloaded my computer. Where do I get it from?
A: I was greatly disapointed to find Real Networks has hidden their archives. The easiest way to download Real Jukebox 2.0 is to visit Download.com and download it from their archives.

Q: Hey! That question looks like last week's. What gives?
A: Similar question, similar answer, different person, different week.

Q: I use my computer for word processing and internet. I don't play games on it, and I'm not a CS Major. Is a celeron 1.8ghz and 512mb of ram fast enough for my needs for 3 more years?
A: As long as you don't change your computing habits, it should be sufficient. If you decide down the road to go into gaming, CAD, heavy multitasking, or want to run the "latest" software at break neck speeds, it won't last you that long. 256Mb of Ram is a good minimum, 512Mb should carry you well.

Q: My new computer came with a 10/100/1000 network card. Why aren't my downloads coming in faster?
A: Your network card can do 1000Mbit, sure, but the campus network does not. Don't count on "gigabit" upgrades any time soon either. This geek remembers when only 2 dorms had ethernet, and they were running 10Mbit. Even when prices on gigabit switches and hubs come down enough for RU to deploy them, some buildings will need to be rewired (again!), and most likely, the dorms will be the last places to be upgraded. Personally, I'd rather the campus network gurus focus on setting up a wireless lan across campus, then to worry with gigabit for the masses.

That's all for this week, folks. Please remember to keep your questions coming by e-mailing whim@radford.edu.

I might just have to do that. I know there have been some issues with winamp 3 stability in winxp (unsure if they are in other os's) but thats mainly from installing winamp3 over winamp 2 ( READ VERY BAD!). But maybe I'll take a shot at a review...

MusicMatch on my computer crashed, often and hard. I ditched it. Windows Media has enough security holes that you could fit an army through. Winamp 3 is unstable, crashes often. Yes, I'm still using Winamp 2.78, and there I will stay for a few more months. Brian, if you love Winamp 3 so much, you are welcome to write an article on it for next season's tech section. www.radford.edu/~archive/season12/submit/

No Shaun! Use winamp 3. I know some people don't like it, but it's even faster, higher quality decoder, and it has really great skins. :) It's my favorite. The playlist setup also loads up faster than any other music program out there...

Screw Real Jukebox. Use either MusicMatch or Windows Media.
