Highlanders try to come in on Big South one game at a time.

The RU Highlanders women's soccer team crushed
Coastal Carolina's Lady Chanticleers 3-0 at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium
Saturday Oct. 5 at 1pm. Forward Nikki Porter scored the first goal 6:25 into the game. About 15
minutes later mid-fielder Debbie Leach was assisted by mid-fielder/defender
Rebecca Hoffman in scoring a well-executed second goal. By half time the
Highlanders had a strong hold on the game and just had to see it through to
the end. The Lady Chanticleers gained renewed strength at the start of the second
half, but the Highlanders were ready for anything and fought off some close
calls. With 22:50 left in the second half Jevne Reid was called on a
questionable yellow card, but she kept her composure and took the penalty
with great dignity. Moments after the yellow card call, team captain Kelly
Bertwell scored the third goal of the game, which nullified any chance of
the Lady Chanticleers winning. Bertwell commented on Saturdays win by saying, "We got in early and kept
up the pressure." If the Highlanders continue to play their game the way they played on
Saturday, there is a good chance for them to advance in the Big South
Conference. When asked about predictions for the Big South Conference coach
Ben Sohrabi said, "I think if we keep playing well we have a good shot."
