Jarrett's Top Ten

Welcome to the 2002-2003 football season.  Whim's sports section has compiled a group of our own columnists to pick the top 10 NFL Teams and College Football teams every week.

Top NFL Teams
Week 7

1. Miami Dolphins (5-1) - They won a huge game at Denver on Sunday night. WOW!  Denver drove down the field too fast.  They could have taken a little more time off the clock before kicking their field goal.

2. Green Bay Packers (5-1) - They should be tied with the Miami Dolphins for #1 because they also won a tough game yesterday against the New England Patriots.    I didn't know the Packers could win away from the "Frozen Tundra."  Once again, I was proven wrong.

3. New Orleans Saints (5-1) - After losing to the Lions (who are much improved this year), the Saints have come back nicely to win 2 straight including an impressive win against the Washington Redskins away on Sunday, 43-27.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-1) - The Bucs have been playing very well as of late.  Jon Gruden must have forgotten:  GIVE KEYSHAWN THE DAMN BALL!

5. Indianapolis Colts (4-1) - The Colts have won 3 straight.  As strange as this season has began, any winning streak is impressive.

6. San Diego Chargers (5-1) - San Diego lost to Oakland, but that is an excusable lost.  Drew Brees is playing his best football as a pro.  He must feel strange handing the ball off to Tomlinson.  At Purdue, the words "hand off" were not found in the playbook.

7. Oakland Raiders (4-1) - Even though they lost to the Rams on Sunday, I can still see them making it to the Super Bowl. Jerry Rice is not playing like an old man.  I don't know what he does, but I hope I can move like that when I'm 39.

8. San Francisco 49ers (3-1) - The Niners play tonight so everything that I say is said is based on what happens before their game against Seattle.  I see them beating Seattle pretty badly.  I think the game against Minnesota wasn't very indicative of the Seahawks.  Minnesota played terrible.

9. Denver Broncos (4-2) - The Broncos should be 5-1 right now.  If the Broncos took more time off the clock, they would be.

10. Philadelphia Eagles (3-2) - I think Philly will get back on track this week with a win against Tampa Bay.  They¹re playing at home and I don't think the Bucs will play well against the Eagles' stout defense.

Top College Teams
Week 8

1. Miami Hurricanes (6-0) - They slipped past Florida State this week, 28-27.  It should be smoothing sailing until December 7th against Virginia Tech.

2. Virginia Tech Hokies (6-0) - Boston College did not play mistake-free football, so they lost.  Rutgers comes calling this week.  This will give the Hokies a chance to work on their passing game.

3. Oklahoma Soooners (6-0) - They beat Texas this week, 35-24.  Chris Simms probably dropped out of the Heisman race with his performance on Saturday. I am not really sure we he was in the race anyway.  I hope Iowa State has good run defense because if they don't, Quentin Griffin might rush for 300 yards.

4. Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0) - They beat San Jose State badly.  Maurice Clarett is playing very well right now.  I am sure he will be at the Downtown Athletic Club on Heisman night.

5. Georgia Bulldogs (6-0) - The Bulldogs got a huge win over Tennessee this week, 18-13.  I hope they can get up to play Vanderbilt (1-5).

6. Oregon Ducks (6-0) - Special teams, special teams, special teams!  One would think that an extra point is automatic.  UCLA could have sent the game into overtime, but they missed the extra point. There is that word again-Special Teams!

7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-0) - Only 3 more wins to an automatic BCS bid.  What is that all about?  The BCS needs to take that clause out.  Some changes definitely need to be made regarding Notre Dame and the BCS.  They should just join the Big East since they already play most of the teams anyway.  Okay, the ND rant is over--for now.

8. Michigan Wolverines (5-1) - Penn State has a problem winning at the Big House.  Michigan plays at Purdue next week.

9.  LSU Tigers (5-1) - LSU lost their first game to Virginia Tech and they haven't lost since.  They could very well win the SEC again this year.

10. Washington State Cougars (5-1) - I don't think Stanford has recovered from the shellacking they received last week from Notre Dame, but WSU played well.  They are idle next week so they may fall out of the top 10.
