Doug's Top Ten
Doug McKinney | Sports Section Manager
Welcome to the 2002-2003 football season. Whim
sports has compiled a group of our own columnists to pick the top 10 NFL
Teams and College Football teams every week.
TOP NFL TEAMS Week 3
1.New England Patriots - If this team is not the first on your list, you aren't a football fan.
2.Oakland Raiders - Listen--the Steelers are a good team. Oakland must be pretty damn good if they went into Pitt and quieted Steel City.
3.Miami Dolphins - What a climb; from number 10 now to number 3! So maybe the Detroit win shouldn't count, but the Indianapolis win was huge! Ricky Williams is just running all over everyone.
4.New Orleans Saints - Sure Ricky Dub is running with Miami now, but Duece is doing a damn good job for filling Ricky's shoes. This team is good.
Very good.
5.Chicago Bears - Da Bears squeaked out a close win over Vick and the
Falcons. Play host to my number four Saints team this weekend.
6.Philadelphia Eagles - I'm very sorry I forgot to add these guys to the
rankings last weekend, but they're here now. Eagles flew high over my
Redskins. Very high.
7.Denver Broncos - Upset St. Louis and now San Francisco. I guess Ed
McCaffrey's return has really helped this team like I said it would.
8.San Francisco 49ers - Niners will wake up from their loss to Denver. Of course, I said the same about St. Louis in their first week lost to Broncos. Hopefully the Niners can recover.
9.San Diego Chargers - I had them in the Top 10 last year around the third week of the season. They better not let me down this year.
10.Washington Redskins - They got embarrassed on national television Monday night for the second straight year. But keep one thing in mind, this is a poll of teams throughout the whole year; as in what teams we think are the best and I don't think you'll be seeing them lose like that again.
Top 10 College Teams
1.Miami - I didn't expect Temple to get as many points as they did. Bottom line: Miami is the best team in the nation.
2.Florida State - I have got to give it up. They beat my Terps and proved to the nation that not only do they want their ACC championship title back, but they want the national championship.
3.Texas - Close game at first with UNC (cough, cough), but the Longhorns
proved to be too strong behind Simms¹ four touchdown passes.
4.Oklahoma - This spot was either going to Ohio State, Virginia Tech or
Tennessee, but I think that 68-0 win over UTEP proved to Sooners fans that the win over Alabama wasn't supposed to be that close.
5.Ohio State - Am I the only who thinks freshmen running back Maurice
Clarett will be Heisman one day? The Buckeyes are really turning some
heads, especially with that huge win over Washington State.
6.Virginia Tech - "The Untouchables" (running backs Lee Suggs and Kevin
Jones for those in a shell) are just plain scary. It's hard to imagine
these guys are right up the street from us.
7.Tennessee - Yeah they dropped two spots from last week, even though they won. Middle Tenn. St. U has a good program, but look who VT and OSU just played--two ranked opponents. Also, the Gators are coming into town this weekend looking for revenge from last year.
8.Oregon - Who is Joey Harrington? Well the Ducks are trying to make a name for themselves with this 2002 edition of balanced offensive attack.
9.Florida - Well the good thing is they didn't get whooped this week. I
think they've thought long and hard this past week about what to do with
their game with Tennessee this weekend.
10.Notre Dame - If you didn't think the big win over my Terps was proof,
nor the win over an always-tough Purdue team, I hope you realized the
Fighting Irish are back after that win over Michigan. Thank Tyrone for
that.

Comments:
I wouldn't call myself a diehard fan of the Pats. You can read my article about fans jumping on the bandwagon at www.thetartan.com. So I know how you feel about fans jumpin on the wagon, but I have to give it up: the Pats are the best team in the NFL as of now.

Oh sure, NOW everyone's a Pats fan. I used to listen to their stuff when they were underground.
