Doug's Top Ten
Doug McKinney | Sports Section Manager

Welcome to the 2002-2003 football season.  Whim sports has compiled a group of our own columnists to pick the top 10 NFL Teams and College Football teams every week.

Doug's picks:
TOP NFL TEAMS
(From week one performances and preseason events)

1. New England Patriots
The defending National Champs were very impressive in a preseason win over the 'Skins; the Pats look to repeat their success from last year.

2. San Francisco 49ers
San Fran kicked off the season right by winning with a field goal over a tough NY Giants team.  What they would give for a win over the Rams this year.

3. Oakland Raiders
Seattle isn't much, but the Black Hole is.  Raiders will be a tough team this year, even though they don't have Chuckie (Coach Gruden for the uninitiated.)

4. Pittsburgh Steelers
Isn't it ironic how they faced the Pats in the season opener after last season's home AFC championship defeat?  Defense looks good, but how will the always-controversial Kordell Stewart do?

5. Tennessee Titans
After very disappointing season last year, a number of bookies must have gotten on the Titans case in the off season for all the money they lost. The former Houston team showed that they are happy in Tennessee with a comeback win over the Eagles.

6. St. Louis Rams
A tough loss to the Broncos should wake the Rams up and they'll be on top of the league very soon.

7. Green Bay Packers
It was a crazy game of football with the Falcons, but Packs managed to pull out as winners in OT.  How can you not love Vick versus Farve?  A great match up to watch for upcoming years.

8. NY Jets
Special teams were very... special.  With Curtis Martin hurt, Jets showed they can still hang tough with OT win over Bledsoe and the Bills.

9. Washington Redskins
The new Fun-Run-Gun offense is quite impressive.  Will Snyder's money finally pay off this year with Coach Spurrier, or will it be another 8-8 season?  I think it will be the year to Hail to the Redskins!

10. Miami Dolphins
Ricky runs for 111 yards as the Dolphins ran all over the Lions.  The only good thing for Detroit; at least you guys scored 21 points!

Top 10 College Teams

1. Miami
The 'Canes proved to yours truly that they are the real deal with a huge win over a good Florida team.  Heck, the way they've been playing, I think the 'Canes are the top dogs in the city of Miami--watch out Dolphins.

2. Texas
Chris Simms is good.  He's better than his daddy, and must lead this Longhorn team.  He better show up for Oklahoma (Oct. 12) and then less then a month after that, against Nebraska (Nov. 2).

3. Florida State
The Seminoles can take control of the top spot of the ACC, but have to face a tough Maryland team.  After the Terps, FSU will face their typical competitive schedule in games with NC State, Miami, and Florida.  But they better not look past the Terps this weekend.

4. Oklahoma
Didn't impress the nation with their fortunate win over 'Bama.  That last-second fumble won't happen in their games with Texas (Oct. 12) or Colorado (Nov 2).  The Sooners must find a way to win other a miracle, or they will Soon be out of the Top 10.

5. Tennessee
Many are still unsure if Casey Clausen is for real, but I'm not.  An impressive win over a fairly tough MTSU team makes the Vols chill at the five spot, but will I be saying the same next week after the hungry 'Gators come to town in two weeks?

6. Ohio State
With two blowout wins, the Buckeyes, led by freshmen back Clarett, are looking to improve from last year's 7-5 season.  A good start can help, but can they run past Washington State U. this Sat?

7. Michigan
If the last second win over Washington didn't give football fans proof that the Wolverines are tough, then maybe a win over Notre Dame on Saturday will?

8. Virginia Tech
The most dangerous backfield in the country, "The Untouchables," have had to play tough games already with LSU and Marshall, but the Hokies want a BCS bowl bid this year and it's just practice time for VT until a warm December date with Miami.

9. Nebraska
I wouldn't be surprised if the Cornhuskers lost to Iowa State in two weeks, but I hope they don't sleep on Penn Sate this weekend.  QB Jammal Lord is no Crouch, but he showed he is skilled with those two TD passes and the one rushing TD over Utah State.

10. Florida
Sure the Gators miss Spurrier and would love to have that Miami game back, but a win over Ohio and exacting revenge on Tennessee after that tough loss last year would get the Gators back on the right track.
