Is "Pistol" Pete done?

After winning a 14th grand slam title at the U.S.
Open is a legacy over in men's tennis? Pete Sampras told reporters last
week that was taking the rest of the year off and that he did not know what
his future plans. Perhaps the greatest men's tennis player of all time might be riding into
the sunset and what a way it would be to do it by winning his fifth U.S
Open. His victory over long time rival Andre Agassi, who had been playing
better tennis, was his first since winning Wimbledon in 2000, a tournament
he has won a record seven times. I would be surprised if he doesn't come
back to give Wimbledon another shot next year. He doesn't want 2002 to be
his last memory from the All England Club where he lost in the second round
to low ranked George Bastl. Sampras has proved everyone wrong at the U.S.
Open, so he has nothing to lose by coming back. His legacy is secure no
matter what happens. His future depends totally what he wants to do, whether he wants to train
hard and play in tournaments he doesn't like. He and his wife Bridgette
Wilson-Sampras are expecting and spending time with his family might more
important now than ever. Obviously, he's seriously considering retirement by
taking the rest of the year off, but he has earned the right to take time
off. I hope he sticks around to give Wimbledon another shot, but I hope he
doesn't turn his decision into a guessing game.
