The Fresh Prince of Sports: Fox leader in sports (don't worry just for October)
Doug McKinney | Sports Section Manager
It's me, It's me--it's that D-O-U-G. What a week of sports! But it only
gets better because FOX, yes, the channel that is known for bringing you
classics like The Simpsons, but also is known for bringing to you
When Animals Attack Vol 17 (I'm being sarcastic, I think they have up to 5
or so), has claimed that they offer the most sports in the month of October.
Well congrats, ESPN has one month of being second place leader. Anywho,
where do I start? Like I said it's been a good week of sports, with lots of
things to talk about, so I'm going to go ahead and touch on three topics.
Seeing how I had a good weekend until the late hours of Sunday night, I'll
start off with why it went bad.
The Washington Redskins Where do you start with this team? So
many questions that they really need to answer of their bye week. Aren't
they supposed to have the best defense? Isn't this new system supposed to
be unbeatable? Will the Skins ever get a quarterback? Why don't they run
the ball to Steven Davis? Where is the LaVar Arrington that we all know?
First off, I think the defense is trying to find their identity. Yes,
they do have the best talent for a defensive side in football. But most of
them have never played together and Marvin Lewis's system is very difficult
and takes time. However, how much time do these guys need? As a big Skins
fan, it's not looking too good.
Same goes for the offense. I keep hearing from analysts that Spurrier's
offense is very complicated and that the offensive weapons the Skins have
don't fit well with the system. Well why the hell does Snyder bring in
Spurrier if the offense is complicated? I like Spurrier a lot and I'm very
happy he's in Washington, but Marty brought in a complicated system last
year, and it took the Skins what six games to finally learn it.
As for the weapons, the Skins have Matthews and Weurfel who excelled in
this system in college, but aren't doing anything now. It's obvious the
playbook is forgetting Stephen Davis, but look at all the other targets you
have: Rod Gardner, Kevin Lockett, Reidel Anthony, and the list goes on.
Weurfel, take that damn glove off of your hand, and start leading this
team. You had a good preseason, and you're still getting shots to play
starting quarterback. Shane is a tough guy and played great against
Arizona, but got beat up pretty badly against the 49ers, so Danny needs to
step up and lead these Skins. If this doesnt work, we can see how Ramsay
has developed, which I think is the best option. If not: Snyder, I'd
advise you to use that money on a QB.
Now Stephen Davis, I feel for you man. You are one of the top rushing
backs in the NFL and I really don't understand how they can ever think of
running less then 20 times a game to you. You're always the one digging the
rest of the team out of the holes, and I hope some changes are made, because
you deserve the ball.
The LaVar deal. In any case, if he reads Whim Sports and I were to say
something that offends him I would be scared out of my mind, so I will try
and be positive. You are the leader of this defense, and I understand you
are unhappy with the new position they are placing you at, but we need some
tackles from you. You call yourself the defensive player of the year, but
you can't miss tackles. If I were you, I would go up to Marvin Lewis and
tell him you want to play linebacker. If Marvin doesn't agree with you, may
God have mercy on your soul. LaVar is not a defensive end, he is a
linebacker. End of story.
Brewers' Hernandez about to set record he shouldn't be proud
of. Things just can't get worse for the Brewers. They already have
almost twice as many losses as wins, but one of their star players,
shortstop Jose Hernandez is on pace to set the record of all time (drumroll
please)...strikeouts?!?! All he needs is one more strikeout and he will be
(do you say winner in this kind of situation, I'll just say record holder)
of most strikeouts in a single season. Coach Jerry Royster pulled him from
playing in the four-game home stand, last week, just because he said he
couldn't bear to watch him break the record at home. Even though he leads
the team in batting average at .284, it's gotten so bad that Brewers fans
have sat down and made 188 "K" placards. Way to support your team, but then
again I wouldn't want people to know I'm a Brewers fan. (Not really I just
like Jeffrey Hammonds)
Patrick Ewing retires from basketball. Patrick Ewing, one of
Georgetown's best basketball players in history, walks away from the NBA
after standing tall for seventeen years. Ewing, one of the greatest centers
of all time, has played for three different teams in the past three years.
It was a close decision if he should've stayed one more year, but clearly he
wasn't playing much last year-as he only started in 4 games and only played
in 65 games. In his career he averaged 21 points a game, with his best
scoring totals back in 89-90 with 28.6 points. He surely will be missed,
but talks are rising about Ewing returning in a Wizard uniform because of
Jordan.
So what have we learned this week class? Yes--the Redskins need to do
some thinking, good. And yes it's true to still lead the team in batting
average and strike outs, you're getting better. And three, Michael Jordan
and Patrick Ewing will reunite to be the oldest, yet dominate force in
sports, ever--I don't know about that one, but as the McDonald's commercials
used to say: It could happen!
With lots of Sports love,
Doug "The Fresh Prince" McKinney
