Movie Review: One Hour Photo
  Beverly Burroughs | Staff Writer

Would you ever believe that a sweet, adorable, and heart-moving actor such as Robin Williams would ever play the roles he has played in his most recent movies? First of all, he dazzled his audience in "Death to Smoochy" when he played the deranged Rainbow Randolph trying to destroy the guy who took his place on a children's show. Then he went a step further as a crazed madman in "Insomnia." His most recent movie, above all, shows that Robin Williams is an outstanding actor who can and will battle any role put in front of him. The movie "One Hour Photo" was released at the end of August. This movie portrays the character of Sy Parrish, played by Robin Williams, as a middle-aged man working in the photo processing department of the local Sav Mart. His character is seen as a very sad and lonely old man who wants nothing more than to belong in a family, especially the Yorkins. The Yorkins consist of Nina (Connie Nielsen), Michael (Michael Vartan), and thier little boy Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy the photo guy, as he is called in the movie, believes he is little Jake's uncle. He has a wild and vivid hallucination that he celebrates the holidays with them and tries everything that he knows to get close to the Yorkins.

As the movie reveals itself, Sy starts to adapt to this made-up life of his. He becomes more and more a part of the Yorkins without their knowledge. He is able to see himself in their life through the pictures that Nina Yorkins bring to him to be processed. Through these pictures, he can see into a part of their life that not many people have the chance to witness. Sy is also interested in another person’s photographs that could possibly tie into the Yorkins. It is these pictures that give the movie its twist. Sy becomes such a part of the Yorkins that he is willing to do anything possible to make sure that they stay a family and that nothing breaks them apart, even if he has to do some weird and unusual things in order to make that happen.

The whole movie gives you a sense of sorrow for the character played by Robin Williams, Sy Parrish. By watching this movie, you feel for the character. Loneliness and isolation from others is a horrible life to lead and Williams plays this part as if he has been there, giving the impression that he knows how it feels to be alone. The movie also brings a sense of suspense. It is one of those instances that you never know what is going to happen until it happens. It leads you in one way while taking an entirely different path. If I had to grade this movie based on the story line; it would receive a B+. If nothing else, the movie would be a great choice just to see the role that Robin Williams has mastered. I recommend it to anyone who has ever felt like they didn’t belong in some form or another. Hope you enjoy the movie.
