A Glimpse into Amanda-Land

3/01/02

I will first state that I am twenty years old. Second, I don’t have a driver’s license. To many people this seems unreal. This past week I have spent many hours behind the wheel. The time has come for me to get my driver’s license. I have compiled the top ten things that people say when I tell them I don’t have my license.

  • Have you ever had a license?
  • Why not?
  • Well, do you have your permit?
  • Wow, I got my license the day I turned 16.
  • I couldn’t live without my license.
  • Do you know how independent you could be if you had your license? (First, I don’t have my license so how would I know? And second, if you have ever met me, I don’t need a car to be independent!)
  • How old are you?
  • How is that possible?
  • You never wanted to?
  • And number one (from my best friend) (mind you, she moved to another state when I finally became interested in driving): Amanda, just let me know when you finally are on the road..and no you can’t drive my car.

Despite all of the top ten things people say to me about not having a driver’s license I will disclose to answer that I give every time I am asked. First, my parents have a Suburban. This is a big car. Mind you, a big scary car. Therefore, I had trouble letting myself get behind the wheel.

Second, I have grown up in Arlington, about a glance away from Washington, DC. If you have ever driven in that area then you might be able to sympathize with my weariness to attain a driver’s license. I do have a learner’s permit. I will tell you that this is one of the best driver’s “license/permit” pictures ever taken.

I was extremely excited about passing the driver’s permit test that when I was completely disappointed with my picture, the person taking the picture offered to take it again, and then again, until I was satisfied. Maybe that is one of the reasons why I was so reluctant to get my driver’s license. Who knows what my sub-conscience is thinking? I certainly don’t! Anyways, I am happy to inform the readers that a driver’s license is in my near future. We will see how this week’s events play into my drivers license plans.

Thank you and have a wonderful week.
