Ask The Geek
Kevin Martin | Tech Section Manager

3/08/02

This week the Geek goes over some mundane technical flimflam including how to hack the Walker Lab computers.

Q: Why would I want USB 2.0?
A: Actually, that one is easy. USB 2.0 offers a vast speed improvement over USB 1.1 This allows for faster CD-burners running on USB (see last week's ask the geek), as well as many other performance enhancements for data-rich items like scanners, and digital camera's.

Q: I'm shopping for a new digital camera. What are megabites?
A:Megabytes are a measurement of storage. The more Mb's you have the more pictures you can take at a set level of quality. Higher quality pictures take more Megabytes of storage.

Q: Why are you running for SGA?
A: Aaahhh, to keep a long answer short, I'm running for SGA because they are gaining more and more power over how your student fees are spent, and I want students to have a new, fresh voice on this important issue. Improved technology is one of my platform planks.

That's it for this week. Don't forget to send your questions to us at Whim. Be sure to put as your subject line "Ask the Geek" so that the Geek gets it! Happy Computing, and I'll see you on the Net!

1. i think the univ should provide laptops.

2. i think more teachers should allow laptops in their classrooms.

3. wouldn't you rather read an e-book than buying (and carrying) a real one?

4. and on a totally unrelated note, what ever happened to ru's plan to put a wireless link station on top or muse? i wanted to surf in heth plaza!

More important than megabytes with digital cameras are the number of pixels per inch. MegaPixels are used to gauge image quality. (the higher the better). I got myself a nice cheap 2.1 MP and it's been perfect. Most of my shots are for the web anyhow. It's all about what your needs are.

Kevin, it might be a good idea to explain the basics of firewalls. I've been hearing lots of misconceptions coming from RU students, and although I don't have time to go into it on my own site, I think a lot of students might benefit from hearing about that.
