Rachel Thomason | Executive Director
3/22/02
The 2002 SGA candidates were introduced to the RU community Thursday,
March 21, at
this year's Meet the Candidates Night.
Current SGA President Curtis Brown
hosted the
event. The SGA will be hiring 17 positions: College of Arts and Sciences
Senator,
At-Large Senator, College of Business and Economics Senator, College of
Education and
Human Development Senator, Executive Vice President, College of
Information Science
and Technology Senator, Junior Class Senator, Legislative Vice President,
Waldron
College of Nursing and Human Services Senator, Off-Campus Student Senator,
On-Campus Student Senator, Pre-Major Senator, President, Senior Class
Senator,
Sophomore Class Senator, College of Visual and Performing Arts Senator,
and Vice
President of Finance.
Each candidate was given the opportunity to present themselves to the
audience and to the other
candidates. After a short speech by the applicants, the Presidential
candidates were
geared up for debate. They were each asked 10 questions by Brown and were
given the
opportunity for rebuttal. Following the debate was a heated audience

to ask questions
of my own. The following are their resulting answers.

Rachel Thomason: What campaigning have you done for this position?
Jason Grogg: I have information on my website, and have spoken to many
campus groups and approximately 1,000 RU students. I am also endorsed by the Graduate
Assistant Council and have posted fliers.
Tariq Bokhari: I have talked to many fraternities, sororities, athletic
teams, sport clubs, and have signs around campus.
Rachel: What do you do in your spare time?
Jason: Participate in my fraternity, go fishing, and visit other
universities to get new ideas
for RU.
Tariq: I play with a local band, Downey Sound, ride my motorcycle, fish,
ski and play
tennis, golf, and many RU intramural sports.
Rachel: What is the first issue you would address as SGA president?
Jason: I would address RU's current alcohol and drug problem. I would
also like to see
electronic billboards put on either side of the Heth/Dalton bridge to
announce upcoming
events.
Tariq: I would fill the SGA committees with professor nominated students
from each RU
college.
Rachel: How would you describe your leadership style?
Jason: I have a great working relationship and am comfortable talking
with students.
Tariq: I can relate to all students, am trustworthy, and have strong
leadership skills.
Rachel: What kind of relationship should the SGA have with other
organizations, the
administration, and the university community?
Jason: I will try to meet everyone half way.
Tariq: What relationship? We need to have a relationship. We need to
bring more
students in to improve relationships.
Rachel: How would you develop the cohesiveness and professionalism of
your staff?
Jason: I will delegate work to members without overburdening them. The
president is only
as strong as his cabinet. I have already started gathering cabinet
members.
Tariq: In order to get along, we should start with a low pressure and
informal social event
to talk about goals. I would break up those goals and then delegate them
so people aren't
overwhelmed.
Now that you know more about the SGA presidential candidates, I expect you
all to vote!
