SGA Presidential Candidates Go Head to Head
Rachel Thomason | Executive Director

3/22/02

The 2002 SGA candidates were introduced to the RU community Thursday, March 21, at this year's Meet the Candidates Night.   Current SGA President Curtis Brown hosted the event.  The SGA will be hiring 17 positions: College of Arts and Sciences Senator, At-Large Senator, College of Business and Economics Senator, College of Education and Human Development Senator, Executive Vice President, College of Information Science and Technology Senator, Junior Class Senator, Legislative Vice President, Waldron College of Nursing and Human Services Senator, Off-Campus Student Senator, On-Campus Student Senator, Pre-Major Senator, President, Senior Class Senator, Sophomore Class Senator, College of Visual and Performing Arts Senator, and Vice President of Finance.

Each candidate was given the opportunity to present themselves to the audience and to the other candidates.  After a short speech by the applicants, the Presidential candidates were geared up for debate.  They were each asked 10 questions by Brown and were given the opportunity for rebuttal.  Following the debate was a heated audience question and answer session.  I had the opportunity to meet with both candidates the next day to ask questions of my own.  The following are their resulting answers.

  • Vice President, Inter Fraternity Executive Council
  • Manager, Men's Basketball Team
  • Member, Heth Student Employee Association
  • Member, Sigma Nu
  • Employee, Campus Recreation Office
  • Member, RU Band
  • Recipient, Who's Who Among College Students Award

Rachel Thomason:  What campaigning have you done for this position?
Jason Grogg:  I have information on my website, and have spoken to many campus groups and approximately 1,000 RU students.  I am also endorsed by the Graduate Assistant Council and have posted fliers.
Tariq Bokhari:  I have talked to many fraternities, sororities, athletic teams, sport clubs, and have signs around campus.

Rachel:  What do you do in your spare time?
Jason:  Participate in my fraternity, go fishing, and visit other universities to get new ideas for RU.
Tariq:  I play with a local band, Downey Sound, ride my motorcycle, fish, ski and play tennis, golf, and many RU intramural sports.

Rachel:  What is the first issue you would address as SGA president?
Jason:  I would address RU's current alcohol and drug problem.  I would also like to see electronic billboards put on either side of the Heth/Dalton bridge to announce upcoming events.
Tariq:  I would fill the SGA committees with professor nominated students from each RU college.

Rachel:  How would you describe your leadership style?
Jason:  I have a great working relationship and am comfortable talking with students.
Tariq:  I can relate to all students, am trustworthy, and have strong leadership skills.

Rachel:  What kind of relationship should the SGA have with other organizations, the administration, and the university community?
Jason:  I will try to meet everyone half way.
Tariq:  What relationship?  We need to have a relationship.  We need to bring more students in to improve relationships.

Rachel:  How would you develop the cohesiveness and professionalism of your staff?
Jason:  I will delegate work to members without overburdening them.  The president is only as strong as his cabinet.  I have already started gathering cabinet members.
Tariq:  In order to get along, we should start with a low pressure and informal social event to talk about goals.  I would break up those goals and then delegate them so people aren't overwhelmed.

Now that you know more about the SGA presidential candidates, I expect you all to vote!

Name: tariq
Comments:
put your name down if you arent scared to voice your opinion. (this goes out to the dorks who leave messages anonomously)

Name: tariq
Year: senior
Major: info systems
Comments:
the last laugh is mine. see who wins tommorrow. nice try all you dorks who represent the SGA that will rape the students of the representation.

Comments:
Ignorant people??!! The only ignorant ones are the clueless bas***ds that vote for Tariq!

Year: Senior
Major: Commercial Fitness
Comments:
I already voted for Tariq!!!

Comments:
they may be students currently, but they only represent themselves, definetly not the student body

Comments:
i cant wait until tariq wins to shut some of these ignorant people up.

Comments:
i am not sure about some of the current candidates motivation for running for these offices.

Comments:
someone spoke with tariq to find out what the SGA was about? how can you ask someone, who knows nothing about the SGA themself, what the SGA is? And as for the SGA "coming back to the students," may I ask you who the current members of the SGA are? Yes, they are students! Imagine that!

Year: Senior
Major: Media Studies
Comments:
Jason Grogg is the only qualified candidate in this race...he knows the ins and outs of SGA and will bring a great deal of professionalism to the office. Electing Tariq will do nothing but make a joke of the office.

Comments:
i will be voting for tariq

Name: chris
Year: junior
Major: finance
Comments:
i can't wait to see the look on the SGA members face when tariq wins

Year: junior
Major: media studies
Comments:
SGA is corrupt. What is it, a secret society you have to be chosen to be in? there is only one man with a fresh perspective that even has a chance to fix this problem, and it isnt grogg

Comments:
until i spoke with tark, i didn't know anything at all about SGA. he is so passionate about his cause to bring the SGA back to the students that I want to be involved myself

Comments:
the only real opposers of tariq are the members of the SGA, since they are the ones that will lose all the power they have kept to themselves to the students that SGA is supposed to represent

Comments:
Tariq looks like an excellent leader that will provide a fresh face in SGA needed to shake things up.

Year: Senior
Major: Political Science
Comments:
I wonder whether such credentials serve a resume building purpose for Mr. Grogg. Does he have time to show us that he really cares?

Comments:
Jason's qualifications make him the more educated choice. His experience in all those committees shows he knows how to work in the SGA system.

Comments:
Well, considering Tariq looks like he would have no idea what to do with the SGA, due to lack of experience, I think I would vote for Jason
