A Little Humanity in Fast Food

If you've ever read George Ritzer's The McDonaldization of Society, you
know how fast food restaurants tend to dehumanize people. Workers respond to
buzzers like perfect robots and perform the same task for hours and hours. But
recently as I drive on Route 11 around the Fairlawn area, and essentially
anywhere else, I'm seeing something with slightly more soul than a Biggie fry.
McDonald's has their "billions and billions served" slogan as the main eye-
grabber on their red and yellow signs with dominant arches reaching and diving
in the air. Hardee's has its blue and orange clash that'll give you a
headache. But the most prominent thing on all these signs is a simple
phrase: "God Bless America."
Don't get me wrong, I don't think people should shove religion down other
people's throats. But if you think about it, this is a very Christian
area. "The buckle of the Bible belt." They probably won't offend anyone. And
imperialism isn't the point here. I think that tiny little phrase is there
simply to say, "Hey, He's with us, however you perceive Him to be."
Listening to the news gets really redundant lately. All I hear is our twit of
a president going on and on about being "for us or against us," the latest
insider report on the location of the perpetrator, and the newest ultimatum
from Pakistan to Afghanistan. It's refreshing to see this surprise in the most
unlikely of places.
Not that I'm going to start eating those cardiac arrests in a box any time
soon, but you know what I mean.
