Holiday Movie Preview - In Theatres and on DVD Shaun Corley | Staff Writer
It’s long been accepted that the holiday season is one of the biggest
times of the year for moviegoers, and this holds true for this year. Here’s a
sneak preview of a handful of films you can waste two hours of your life
watching over break!
Remember how the scary movie genre got lampooned last year in Scary
Movie? Well, the teen movie genre gets a similar treatment in Not
Another Teen Movie, which opens on December 14th. Opening that same day
is Cameron (Almost Famous) Crowe’s latest offering Vanilla Sky.
Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Jason Lee, Kurt Russell and Penelope Cruz all star.
Opening on December 19th is one of this year’s most anticipated
movies: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The first
in a trilogy, this film stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Sean Astin and Liv
Tyler, among others. Look for this one to slaughter the competition,
including Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, which opens two days later.
Produced by Nick Films, Neutron boasts some impressive voice talent,
namely, Patrick Stewart. Ali, a biopic starring Will Smith in the
title role, opens on Christmas Eve. Perhaps this will provide Smith’s career
with a much-needed boost?
OK, so you’re the stay at home type. That’s fine; there are plenty of
awesome DVDs coming this season. Pearl Harbor hits stores December
4th, three days shy of the 60th anniversary of the attack. December 11th sees
the release of Rush Hour 2, The Score and Jurassic Park
III. On that same day, a box set containing all three Jurassic
Park movies will be released. Scary Movie 2 and Moulin
Rogue will be available December 18th, as will the complete first season
of Twin Peaks. Also, don’t discount releases already in stores when
doing your holiday shopping, such as the Godfather Boxed Set, The
Simpsons Season One Boxed Set, Willow,Planet of the Apes and
Shrek.
