2001 MTV Video Music Awards

On September 6 2001, MTV aired its 18th annual VMA's. The usual smut-
filled, built for kids, eye candy of a show proved that it could be
professional and full of good content. Now, don't get me wrong, it has its
low points (Britney Spears) but they managed to get the "King of Pop" on the
show, which amazed me.
There were some great live performances, including three from rock
groups Staind, Linkin Park, and U2. Rap was also represented with Jay Z
performing his hit single "Izzo" and Missy Elliot's "Get Your Freak On/Minute
Man" medley. Missy, who had Ludacris, Nelly Furtado, and Trina featured in her
performance, dedicated it to the loving memory of her longtime friend Aaliyah.
Pop once again had a big part in the VMAs. But think about it, what
would MTV be without pop? Britney Spears performed the first single off her
still untitled third album which is due out on November 6th. Nsync had a fair
performance until Micheal Jackson came out from behind the etch-a-sketch and
blew us all away. I can't remember the last time I saw him on TV. He did some
sort of grapevine/moonwalk thing but it seemed to work. I think we were all
glad to see him again after his long break from the public scene. Alicia Keyes
had the best performance of the night. Her hit single "Fallin," is
the most addictive song I've heard in a long time. Her work paid off when she
won the "Best New Artist in a Video Award." The worst performance of the night
came from J-Lo and Ja Rule. J-Lo absolutely can't sing live and Ja Rule should
just stick to rapping and drop the baritone "I think I'm part of Boyz II Men
voice."
All in all the show was a success and proved to be a lot better than last
year's. Jamie Foxx did a great job hosting but we all miss Chris Rock. Maybe
it just seemed great after the disaster last year with the Wayans Brothers as
co-hosts.
