Cooking with Whim
The Whim Staff
Dalton getting you down? Not in the mood for Muse? Can't stand to look at another Chrustie? We here at Whim have the answer. Over the next couple of weeks, we'll be providing you with some recipes for a good ol' dorm-cooked meal. So, without further ado, here are this week's recipes:
From staffer Zac Martin:
"Simple Ol' Recipe"
-one box of elbow macaroni
-one can of cream of mushroom soup
-one can mushroom pieces
In one pot, boil water and fix the macaroni. In another pot, heat the soup then add in the mushroom pieces. Drain the excess water off of the elbow macaroni, then combine the two.
Voila!
From Graphics Manager Jenn Peterson:
"Cinnamon and Sugar Rice"
(It's kinda like oatmeal, but with rice instead of oats.)
You'll need:
plain white rice - You can either cook it yourself or use leftover from chinese takeout.
cinnamon
sugar - If you're really cheap, you can use sugar packets you've picked up from restaurants or dinning halls instead of buying it.
milk
Cook desired amount of rice (if cooking it yourself). Once you have your cooked rice, just add milk, cinnamon and sugar to taste. If you're using already-made rice, you might want to nuke it in the microwave before eating. I recommend this for breakfast.
From Executive Director Rachel Thomason:
"Saucy Vegatables"
(Here's one for the kiddies who won't eat their vegetables. It's good, I promise.)
You'll need:
1-2 small yellow squash
1 zuchinni
1 onion, cut in chunks or rings
1 tomato, cut in 6-8 chunks
1 8oz can taco sauce
1 tsp oregano
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
1 tps vegetable oil
1 cup shredded monterey jack cheese
Heat oil on medium-high in large fring pan. Add squash, zuchinni, and onion and stir until cooked. Add tomato and oregano. Cook additional 2 min. Add taco sauce, salt and pepper. Cook until taco sauce boils. Reduce stove to low. Top with cheese and cover for 2 min or until cheese is melted.
Note: I would recommend generic, canned taco sauce. Last time I used Ortega mild and it wasn't as good. This recipe is good and pretty healthy. Even the Whim staffers liked it...and we all hate vegetables! :)
Tune in next edition for more recipes.
