Imagine it's the late 1970's and you are in the Philippines. President Marco
disbands Congress, martial law is declared, and the only person who tries to
run against the president is put in jail just for the fact that he wanted to
run for president.
Now imagine some students from the University of the Philippines asks
you, "What is it like to live in America? What is it like to choose who you
want to run the country? What is freedom, liberty, and economic freedom
like?" This is the very scenerio that made Mark Earley realize that he wanted
to be in politics. He wanted to rekindle a passion for equality and liberty
not just for us, but for future generations.
Mark Earley was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1954 and was raised in Chesapeake,
Virginia. He went to public school and graduated from Indian River High school
in 1972. He went on to William and Mary where he earned a degree in religion
in 1976 and after working in campus ministry in the Philippines earned a second
degree from William and Mary in law. Since earning his second degree Mark has
married his wife Cynthia, had six children, practiced law in Hampton Roads for
15 years, served on several city boards, and in 1987 won a seat in the Virginia
Senate. After 10 years in the Senate Mark went on to become Virginia Attorney
General and now, he hopes to tackle the position of Governor.
This brings us up to the recent University Forum at which Mark Earley was the
guest speaker. Dr. Covington welcomed the large crowd to the forum, then
proceeded to the introductions where Morgan Griffith (House majority leader)
and U.S. Senator George Allen spoke and introduced the honored guest.
Early spoke out about the recent terrorist attacks and how they define the
immediate priority of our next governor. He must protect the safety of
Virginia because we are a target-rich area, not only because of the amount of
armed forces in our state, but we also host 60% of the world's internet traffic
since AOL is located in Virginia. Because of this, the new governor must form a
partnership with state, local, and federal enforcement.
Common sense principles are also a major part of Earley's campaign. He urges
that we not just educate our children, but the next generation about what our
values are and to protect them. Earley went to public schools as do his own
children. He wants to build students as well as teachers with smaller classes
and give more opportunites to less fortunate children with scholarships,
special schools, bring teachers' salaries up to the national level, and test
the competency of teachers. Earley is also very strong about mentoring. He
wants to recruit 2100 new mentors to be lunch and study buddies with children.
He hopes that RU students will be among the mentors that are recruited.
University funding is also on Earley's mind. To improve base funding adequacy
Earley wants to invest in capital construction, increase the base budget of
operations, attract more money for research and development as well as more out
of state students and also focus on quality appointees to college boards. He
said that RU is one of Virginia's most understated institutions and that we can
do something about that.
Earley also wants to build up the economy. He has a $1 Billion bond proposal
for capital reconstruction and to improve transportaion without affecting
taxes. He wants to encourage consumer confidence by cutting taxes and tax
reform.
Mark Earley believes that Virginia can lead the nation now as we did in the
nation's birth. He's a man with experience we can trust and ready to lead
Virginia.

Yes Jeff, I'm sure eveyone heard the election results. Too bad you have to write a little gloating post. Also, 103,000 in the scheme of things is not really that huge, it's closer than many elections in the past have been.

Well no matter how many episodes of South Park you watch, Warner won. And while the margin may have been small in many's eyes--about 103,000, those were 103,000 people with completely different ideas of right and wrong, how government should work, and what this state needs right now. They all voted for Warner.
I think what screwed Earley up was the big budget mess he and Gilmore were a huge part of. I mean, when VDOT has a $54 million computer that no one has touched, it's a misappropriation of funds. That's just one example.
Let's see what Warner can do.

One show must watch: South Park episode 413 TrapperKeeper......you dems will know what I'm talking about when you see it.

Nah, I've heard it in other places before. Being around a lot of School Board types back home will allow one to hear the term quite a bit. Especially when the elephants freeze everything you have.

Is it just me, or did the term "fiscal conservative" seem to be created from this gubernatorial race?
Name: Jeff Year: Senior Major: Warner Supporter Comments: If he becomes the next governor, which, considering his rash of lies about Warner, and Warner's refusal to play Earley's mud-slinging game, seems highly unlikely. Why would Warner, a fiscal conservative, raise taxes by $900 million? He's not going to. Regardless, Earley's campaign paints him as a tax fiend but then turns around and says they want to increase government spending. You can put your foot in your mouth now, Earley. Also, Warner continues to fly ahead of Earley in the polls, and has been even before the Republicans decided on Earley over Lt. Gov. Hager. When I talked with Warner, he told me that politics as usual doesn't work anymore. Government needs to work within its means, and Earley has to be insane to think we can cut taxes and increase spending. Where's he gonna get that money from? And who will get those tax cuts? Probably no one you know. I missed the deadline for absentee ballots, so I'm going to drive home Tuesday morning to cast my vote for a man who will be a breath of fresh air, compared to the everyone-fend-for-yourself government this state has been plagued by for the past 8 years.

Interning with the Earley campaign this summer this is just another one of Marks great speeches, showing everyone what a great person Mark Earley is and what he will do for the CommonWealth of Virginia once he becomes our next Governor.

Its so interesting how this Gilmore republican can convince people he wants to improve things by spending more money. Yet he wants to cut taxes! Let's see if I spend a $100 pay check on the same monthly bills then decide to work fewer hours next time earning only $80 how do I pay the remaining $20 in bills. hmmm! I'm a republican believing that we should have smaller government and more support for businesses. However, this year I'm a Mark Warner supporter. Earley's support for the religious right and desire to cut taxes yet increase spending is definitely not what I believe should be the principles of Government over the next year. Come on people, don't let these tax cutting fools fool you when they say they want to cut taxes yet increase spending. I think Mark Earley is a good man but his views and support of things are just not what our state needs today. We need dynamic leadership and courage to tackle problems with his/her own ideas not other people's. But hey, you decide why you're going to vote for Earley and then ask yourself...is he, himself, really up to the challenge.
