Up until last weekend, I could say that I had never been to a sci-fi convention. Of course, I really can't say that now. Over break, I attended Technicon XVIII in Blacksburg. I really didn't know what to expect when I went. I checked out the convention's web page and it did promise a lot of activities and presentations. So, I thought, why not? Well, after shelling out 15 bucks to register, I decided to take a look around. First stop, the upstairs dealers' rooms (just a fancy name for a place to buy lots and lots of stuff). I can't say that I bought a lot of but I did shell out another 15 bucks for an anime soundtrack that I had been looking for. It was definitely worth the money. I spent the majority of my time looking around. They had anime and video rooms set up where you could watch it all day. If you were in the mood for gaming, there was a separate hall set up for card games, video games and board games. There were several panels and guests to see. I attended the "Vampires, Goths, and Power Exchanges, Oh My!" where we ended up talking about not only vampires but the belly dancing demonstration later in the day. It was quirky but a good way to spend an hour. I had expected all kinds of weird and strange people but everyone was really friendly and nice to talk to. There were people from Hollins College and some all the way from North Carolina. It was definitely an interesting mix of sci-fi and fantasy lovers. There was just so much going on. I'd really like to it again sometime. I would have to say that it was one of the best things that I did over spring break.
