There probably isn't a member of our generation who doesn't remember Gremlins. You probably remember thinking how cute Gizmo was, and you probably remember both cringing and laughing over the Gremlins destructive rampage through the town. You probably remember the three simple rules regarding the Mogwai's care, which we'll talk about later.
Taking an old superstition and breathing new life into it, Gremlins stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates and Hoyt Axton. Produced by Joe (The Howling) Dante, the plot goes like this: Billy Peltzer (Galligan) receives a Christmas present of the most unusual type: a small furry creature referred to as Mogwai, which Billy names "Gizmo." Billy is given three simple rules to follow to care for Gizmo: keep him out of bright light, don't get him wet and "no matter how much he cries and begs, never ever feed him after midnight." The fun starts when rule number two is broken, which causes Gizmo to spawn a whole litter of Mogwai. Far more mischievous and sinister than their sibling, these new Mogwai promptly set out to cause Billy to break rule three. Once he does, the new Mogwai mutate into Gremlins. Quickly setting out on a rampage, Billy, his girlfriend Kate, and Gizmo must stop the Gremlins before they destroy the town.
Gremlins was a massive hit when it was first released in 1984. A tidal wave of merchandise followed, amongst them trading cards, book and record sets, action figures, shirts, and of course, stuffed Gizmos. A sequel, titled Gremlins 2: The Next Batch followed in 1990.
Gremlins works on several levels. Highly original, the film alternates between being downright hilarious and absolutely horrifying. You'll cringe when the Gremlins attack a man dressed up as Santa Claus and be rolling in the floor laughing when they take over the town bar. A movie like this could come across as cheesy, but thanks to strong performances and a killer script, the result is one of the most striking films to emerge from the 1980s
