Book Review: Castor Oil For the Soul
Graphic By: Rachel Thomason

The Chicken Soup for the Soul series has proven to be a runaway success for publishers and booksellers, and has drawn positive reviews from readers all over. Now Earl Barr and Rigor Mortis Publishing House are hoping to catch lighting in a bottle a second time with their Castor Oil for the Soul series.

"I for one find the Chicken Soup series revolting," Barr remarked in an interview on Larry King Live. "Yeah, reading all those uplifting, heart warming stories just makes my stomach do cart wheels! The real world ain’t nothing like that.

"Castor Oil For the Soul tells it like it is. It makes the reader confront all of life’s cold, hard realities. No heart-warming stuff here. No sir-eeee. Take this here first chapter, it’s called ‘Your Daughters a Pregnant Crack Whore. Deal With It!’" Now that’s real life! Just like on Jerry Springer."

Other highlights of Castor Oil For the Soul includes the third chapter: "Job Breaks Down: Bad Things Happen to Good People," which relates the story of a devout Catholic who falls upon hard times. After losing his high paying job as the third shift supervisor at the shoe lace factory, his wife leaves him for Russell Crowe and his daughter turns to prostitution. He then takes up an affair with a local insurance saleswoman, who as it goes, is also seeing Crowe. After finding out about the affair, Crowe drives to the man’s house and plummels him in front of her daughter and her pimp. With no faith left in her father, she forsakes him. Broken and despondent, the man commits suicide. "That’s the stuff people really want to read," Barr exclaimed.

The first copies of Castor Oil For the Soul won’t appear in bookstores until mid-June, but Barr says that people are already lining up to get their copies. Barr is so sure that the book will be a success that he is already planning to develop a whole line of Castor Oil books.

"I’ve already got Castor Oil For the Working Man’s Soul on the drawing board. I’ve had a few people express interest in a Castor Oil For the College Soul and a Castor Oil For the Elderly Soul. As far as I’m concerned, the sky’s the limit!"
