As a foreign languages major I need a total immersion to qualify to graduate. Total immersion means that I have to be surrounded by the language I study 24/7 for a period of time to help improve my speaking and comprehension skills. Most often this means that students, like myself, will go to a country where the language is native. Some people in other majors have told me that they would like to go abroad and experience another country but think they can't because they are not foreign language majors. This is untrue. Anyone at Radford can study abroad. Yes, you too can study abroad.
The International Education Office offers a wide variety of study abroad programs that anyone, regardless of major, can benefit from. Many programs do not require any kind of language experience and some are instructed in English. Some 2000-2001 programs include study in England, Greece, France, Ireland, Scotland, Austria, Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, Spain, Venezuela, or Mexico. There are many other places to choose from and if a program you desire is not offered by RU but by another organization or institution, you can get approval from your advisor and the University.
What are some of the benefits of studying abroad? You can earn valuable credit hours as electives, general education, or possibly towards your major. Some students can even get internships. Immersion in another country is the best way to learn about other cultures. Are you going to learn more about how Spaniards live by living with them or listening to what some one else tells you about Spain? You can also travel and see all sorts of new people and places. Study abroad also looks great on resumes and helps open up future job opportunities. You could be sent back someday as a part of your career. Wouldn't that be cool?
When can you go and how long will you be abroad? Programs are offered during the fall and spring semesters. You can also choose to go over the summer or for the full academic year. Some programs are as short as 3 or 4 weeks so there is not much time commitment.
Some of you may be wondering how much study abroad will cost you. In most cases there shouldn't be too much difference as if you were studying at Radford. Financial aid and scholarships can be applied towards the cost of study abroad so money should not be too much of a problem.
You can stop by the International Education Office in room 302 of Cook Hall of International Education and inquire about a study abroad program that can benefit you. You can also visit the international education website to learn more about the world has to offer you. Happy travels!
