Where's The Snow?![]() City hall, taxes, death, and Mother Nature. These are the things that you simply can't fight in life. Taxes and death are predictable; you always know the general forms they are going to take. That leaves city hall and nature. City hall you can at least bargain with, or even bribe, to get the things you want, but Mother Nature is the most fickle, unappeasable, cruelest force known to man. On Thursday, October 5, we all experienced an uncommon warm streak here at Radford, where you could actually go outside in shorts and a t-shirt and still feel a little hot. The next day, Friday, cooled down a bit, but it was still pleasant, like a spring afternoon. Saturday, nature through a temper tantrum, and it was freezing cold, the kind of cold that makes you not want to get out of bed in the morning. Sunday, the sun was shining again, but it was still chilly, a cheap imitation of the warm, enjoyable days before. The bottom line is that we want it to be warm, and, if it has to be cold, at least let it snow! So where's the snow? Ask Ma Nature. She's teasing us with warm weather, only to slap us in the face with bitter cold again. To add insult to injury, it won't snow. It's damned sure cold enough, and there's plenty of moisture trapped in the valley, so where is it? Where's the snow, Mother Nature? The Weather Channel predicted that it would snow, however lightly, this weekend, with a small chance on Saturday (October 7th) and a greater chance on Sunday (October 8th). Well, we're still waiting. Many of us came to Radford from places that didn't get a lot of our favorite frozen precipitation. I came from the coast, where the warm air from the ocean kept snow at bay, and I was lucky to see snow once every few years. I came to Radford expecting a change. Sure I knew it was going to be cold, but I was prepared to wear my heavy coat and go outside and have snowball fights with my RAs. Well, now it's cold, and I, like the rest of Radford, am waiting for it to go ahead and snow. Don't make us wait Mother Nature, we're impatient! |
