Unreal Tournament 432 Patch Out
Graphic By: Rachel Thomason

Unreal Tournament fans of the world, rejoice! All the problems plaguing D3D (Microsoft's Direct 3D) acceleration have been wiped away, improving frame rates up to 10%. I had the opportunity to test both versions 428 and 432 before and after I upgraded my test system (read "my computer").

Shot By: Grant SimmonsOn a Slot 1 Pentium III 600EB, I would constantly get between 55 and 60 frames per second at 1024x768 resolution with all textures on high detail. After installing the 432 patch, my frame rates shot up to around 65 to 70 frames per second on all, but the highest density of polygons, which only occurs on a few maps. After installing my new FlipChip Pentium III 800 and going back to the 428 patch, I was at a steady 60 frames per second, no matter what. Installing the 432 patch rocketed me to an AMAZING 85 frames per second at 1024x768 and, in some cases, over 100 frames per second at 640x480 resolution.

Shot By: Grant SimmonsWhile most of these amazing frame rates are due to the fact that I own an Nvidia Geforce 2 GTS, the simple fact is that installing the patch provided almost as much increase in performance than the new motherboard and chip. To be able to say that about a software patch is truly astounding.
