Make your own music with Ejay

Have you ever wished that you could be a DJ making your own mixes or just produce music? Well now you can by turning your own computer into a musical studio. Ejay is just one of many similar products made by Voyetra Turtle Beach, Inc., which are geared for those who want to feel what it is like to create music. The important thing Voyetra wanted to offer consumers was the ability to create quality sounding music without tons of expensive equipment or years of training. If you like electronic music this program has a lot to offer for the modest price tag of $39.95.

There are several different types of Ejay programs covering a large variety of musical styles; some examples are Hip Hop, Rave, and Dance. The program I have been using for a couple of months is Techno Ejay, which is not surprisingly made with creation of techno music specifically in mind.

The main goal is the Ejay product series is to allow the user to be able to install the program and within minutes create a catchy loop of music with ease and simplicity. The program has a very simple interface that allows the user to simply browse through the 3,000 samples and drag and drop them into the sequencing window to make a track. Each of the samples has been professionally recorded and covers a wide range of tastes such as Techno, Drum 'n Bass, House and Trance.

If you compare this program to other types of electronic music making software, such as Acid by Sonic Foundry, you begin to notice a larger price tag. This is because programs like Acid are more complex, allowing the user to have more control over every aspect of his/her music. I have used a trial version of Acid and found it to be frustrating and very time consuming to create even a simple loop. I'm sure that for those into serious music recording and production, programs like Acid are invaluable. However, for the average person looking for entertainment and hassle free music creation these are just too complex.

Ejay on the other hand comes with a much more simplified outlook on music making. All you need to use and enjoy the program is your ears, a little time and creativity. Ejay doesn't require you to have musical talent or any prior musical production skills to begin to create music right away. Voyetra has also catered to those who know a little about music by adding several features such as a Mixer which like an equalizer allows you to adjust the individual track levels which gives you more control over the overall quality of sound of the track. Another is the FX Studio where you can take an individual sample and add effects such as echo and distortion then save them as a new sample to use in your track. Also a time stretcher allows you to speed up or slow down the tempo of samples. The most complex thing about Ejay is the Hyper Generator, which allows you to create your own loops and sound samples by editing the original ones that come with the program to suit your own needs.

By far the coolest thing about the program is the simple fact that you aren't limited to the samples that come with it; you can import your own .wav samples and convert them to the proper tempo for your track. This means any favorite line from a movie or cartoon and even your own recordings can be added to Ejay! The possibilities are limited to your own imagination.

When you have finished a track you can save the mix as an Ejay file for later editing or when ready export it as a .wav file. Then you can listen to these tracks on your PC without using Ejay or burn them to disc for your own enjoyment. How cool would it be to be in your car and have a friend ask, "hey what is this? It's good!"? You reply, "I made it last night, and thanks!" You can even use conversion software and turn the .wav file into a .MP3 for use on your PC, stereo, or portable MP3 player.
