Cotton Kings Rock Champs!

Speaking from a band's point of view, a weeknight bar gig can be hard to handle. Most people tend to avoid bars on weeknights, instead waiting for the weekend, when they can afford the time to let go. The ones that do show up tend to be inattentive and skirt around the music in the background; however, you can't let this factor hold you down.

The Cotton Kings, a group composed of mainly Radford locals, played to their full ability at Champs, a Blacksburg sports bar, on September 13th, despite a small turnout of very unimpressed locals.

The group, doing an acoustic set minus their drummer, tore through originals, like "Miles Away" and "Fly on the Wall", and also some covers like "Una Soda" (originally by the defunct group The Replacements) and a very moving version of the Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix/Dave Matthews favorite "All Along the Watchtower".

Always a very fun show to attend, the Kings seemed a bit off of their game due to a very lackluster crowd and some trouble with broken strings. The band puts a lot of emotion into their songwriting and that emotion translates directly into their live show as they joke and give the crowd a light-hearted atmosphere to just enjoy. I highly recommend their music and, beyond that, their live shows. They're now the house band at Champs and play there every other week on Wednesday night from 10:00 pm until 1:00 am. Check them out: it's well worth the price of admission.

That's great that they are doing a Replacements song. However, Bob Dylan is the only person in the world who does "All Along the Watchtower" and can take credit for it.
