A Must See Flick From the Video Vaults: Army of Darkness
Garphic By: Grant Simmons

Let me guess. I bet you've always wondered what it would be like to take a late 20th Century person and fling them back in time, armed to the teeth with a chainsaw, a rifle, and a '76 Oldsmobile. Am I right? Well, here it is. Army of Darkness is the third and probably final installment in the Evil Dead Trilogy.

Here's a very basic shakedown of the plot:

In a slight remake of the ending of Evil Dead 2, we find our hero Ashley J. Williams (Bruce Campbell) sucked into a vortex that sends him back in time to 1350 A.D. The Wiseman John surmised that Ash was the one written about in the Book of the Dead, called the Necronomicon. According to the text, Ash has been sent back to deliver them from the deadites. But a non-Excalibur wielding King Arthur suspects Ash is allied with Henry the Red, a nearby enemy kingdom's ruler. So, Ash is hurled into a water-filled pit crawling with demons. After a great ten-minute action scene, he is able to strike a "deal" with Arthur that if he retrieves the book, they will send him back to his own time. He is instructed that he must say three little words before retrieving the book. If the words were said wrong, the Army of Dead would be released. He tries to say the words right, really. But, as you can probably surmise from the title, the Army marches. Along the way, Ash must do battle with his possessed medieval girlfriend, the Army of Dead, and even himself (as Evil Ash and little Ashes). This ends the Evil Dead series.

Of course that really doesn't mean the end. A video game based on the trilogy has made its way onto the Playstation. Evil Dead: Ashes to Ashes is what Bruce Campbell considers to be the sequel to Army of Darkness. This is one way to keep the legend alive. Even though you can buy the tape, the movie is available on DVD, which is an excellent buy because the alternate ending and extra scenes are included.

Bite me Rachel! Yes, it is very true that Duke Nukem got some of its audio clips from this fine production. They have recently changed the name of the PS title to Evil Dead: Hail to the King.

I would have to say the Evil Dead series was one of the more cheesy but yet successful horror series of all time. I will never forget in Evil Dead 2 when Campbell chopped off his hand and started dancing with all the possessed furniture. One thing about the Army of Darkness: Did the video game Duke Nukem get some of its dialogue from this film? Good movie series for serious horror buffs.
