RU Professor Chelsea Adams Holds Poetry Reading

Chelsea Adams, an instructor of English and advisor to Exit 109, recently published a collection of poetry, titled Looking for a Landing. To commemorate the occasion, the English Department sponsored a reading on Thursday, November 16.

"She brings poetry wherever she goes," said Dr. Carolyn Matthews, introducing Adams to a very large and very enthusiastic turnout. Adams appeared genuinely humbled by the reception and took time to thank a wide variety of people ranging from her family to the publishers to her colleagues in the English Department.

Thomason Adams opened her reading with "Beeline," which is also the first poem in the book. "The Shadows," the second poem Chelsea read, introduced the shadow image which dominates her work. Other poems read include the powerful "Fragrant Arms," the light and humorous "Cows," "The Aesthetics of Dying" and "Tunneling Again," which were described as her "morbid" poems, and "Conversation," which is about her husband Bill, of whom she said "talks to trees." Adams also introduced three new poems: "Trouble With Good Grades," a poignant look at first love, "The 19th Hole" and "Altered Vision."

Adams' book, Looking for a Landing, is available for sale in the RU Bookstore. Adams will also be doing appearances at various bookstores throughout the area over the next two months
