The Radford University Dance Team returned from the recent NCA/NDA dance camp in Myrtle Beach, SC, with a prize. The RU Rockers received a bid to compete in the National College Dance Competition in Daytona, FL, in April.

"The selection for national competition made up for the long camp days," Co-Captain Juli Flounders said. The dancers were up and moving by 7:30 a.m. and attended class through the day until 5:30 p.m., she said. Classes were held in Pommy Jazz, Pommy Funk, and Technique. In addition, individual instructors taught routines featuring their special styles. "It's really a great experience to work with the guest choreographers and experiment in different styles than that of your own coach," Flounders said.

A faculty member from the NCA staff worked as a buddy instructor with each team's coach to help the dancers perfect the routines for competition. "This part of camp is the hardest on the girls, especially after a day of nonstop dancing," Coach Genia Johnson said. "It was at these late night rehearsals the girls really pulled together and showed complete team unity."

The Rockers were rewarded for their effort not only with their ticket to compete but also with a Red and Blue Ribbon, Spirit Sticks and the selection as the team that improved the most during the camp.

Johnson, a four-year member of the team, was just recently selected head coach. Also leading the performance group are Angela Revis as captain and Juli Flounders, Christy Costello and Laura Williams as co-captains. You can see the Rockers perform at half-time at both men's and women's basketball games. For more information about the RU Rockers, visit their web site.
