Republican Candidate "OZ" visits RU![]() Well, I know we're not in Kansas. And I haven't seen any munchkins lately. So what is "OZ" doing at RU? He's running for Congress. On Wednesday, September 13, Michael D. Osborne visited Radford University to participate in the semester's first student forum, "Voter Awareness." Nicknamed "OZ", Osborne spoke to a group of students and faculty, Kappa Alpha Psi, the College Republicans, and the Young Democrats about the 2000 Republican platform. In his speech, this 9th district congressional candidate focused on "the responsibility of being a Republican." He stressed that Republicans should take responsibility for their actions in issues such as the death penalty and abortion. Osborne was nominated the Republican Party Candidate for Congress on May 27, 2000. His platforms include increasing financial security, bringing more jobs, mending the broken promises, and preserving the family. For more information on this candidate, please visit www.ozforcongress.com. Visit www.sbe.state.va.us/votregserv for information on registering to vote. Also visit www.sbe.state.va.us/Election/absente1.htm for information on absentee voting.

Apparently, he doesn't have too much to say...yet. Boucher won the 9th anyway, so it shows Oz didn't have the goods. And talk about a landslide victory...good grief...

Regarding the Death Penalty: Blacks convicted of killing whites are far more likely than any other category of offender to receive a death sentence. Whites have rarely been sentenced to death for killing blacks, and, since the death penalty was reinstated, only 6 white persons have been executed for killing a black person. A study conducted by researchers from Northeastern University and the University of Florida in 1990 found that blacks convicted of killing whites in Florida were five times more likely to receive death sentences than whites convicted of killing whites. In Texas, blacks found guilty of killing whites were found to be six times more likely to receive the death penalty than whites convicted of killing whites.
A study published in the Stanford Law Review in 1984 found similar disparities based on race in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Virginia. Researchers found that in cases of white homicide victims, the defendant is between 2.3 and 9 times more likely to receive a death sentence than in cases of black victims.
The United States General Accounting Office released a report in early 1990 which found, even under present law, "a pattern of evidence indicating racial disparities in the charging, sentencing, and imposition of the death penalty."
In March 1994 the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights issued a report showing that since 1988, in 9 out of 10 of the federal death penalty prosecutions the defendant was black or Hispanic. All defendants approved by Attorney General Janet Reno for death have been black. Also, between 1973 and 1997, at least 69 men were released from death rows in 17 U.S. states with significant evidence of innocence. Flaws inherent in the death sentencing system had allowed them to be wrongfully convicted. For at least 23 people executed in this country in this century, the discovery of those flaws came too late. What do you have to say to that Andy?

I am tired of hearing about how the poor and persons of color are to unfairly given the death penalty. Scottie, how familiar are you with Virginia's Death Row? There are many whites. Why are you trying to make this a racial issue? Such brutal crimes as those that warrant the death penalty, are equally as terrible reardless of the race of the offender.

Why do they belive we cannot run our own lives. All aound the world these "people" who have hard enough time controling themselves think they can contol everyone. Why? what goes through the mind of one of these Politicians they spend there time arguing over trivial matters with each other. while their inforced laws continue the Injustice that Politicians naturally thrive on. why do we let them? are we sheep for them to show the path "Their Path" no we are not, They have made us this way for too long they have told us they know best that they can change the world for the better. And does anything change. The Answer is yes everything changes it gets worse. In almost every aspect of life they are there. Humanity will never evolve while these Politicians from every part of this earth drain the life from each of us. Should we stop them, could we stop them, would we stop them, given the chance could we find a better way? It's possible but by no means certain. but it has to be better than this!
Why should Rick debate you? Why should he waste his time on guy with no funding, even from his own party? Why should he take the time off from being a damn good congressman to lend legitamcy to your sharade of a campaign?

Wow! You all really think the 9th is in dire straits because of Rick Boucher's representation?!? Andy Vehorn is from the Tidewater area, so I forgive his not understanding our region, but goodness Oz, you actually live here! You can actually get up and say (with a straight face) that Boucher is bad for the 9th? I've lived in the 9th my entire life. I know hundreds of people from the 9th. I've never heard anyone blame our troubles on Rick before. Even the Republicans I know support Rick because he has done so much for us over the years. They would rather he be one of them, but you can’t have perfection. In fact, one very prominent Republican and RU student told me two weeks ago that we was surprised to find Boucher was a Democrat, because he always brags about what a great job he is doing for our region to his Rich Republicans parents in Northern Virginia. But let's put all that to the side for a moment. Suppose Oz actually wins, how is he going to get more money and development into this area as a freshman Congressman than a tenured and experienced statesman would? Let’s have specifics.A lso, Andy not all Democrats are against the Death penalty, and those of us who do oppose it oppose it for the same reason Pat Robertson does- the people who wind up being put to death tend to be the poor and persons of color who can't afford good lawyers.

I had a great time at RU. Hope to return again soon. I have challenged Mr. Boucher to a wrestling match or debate. I can understand why he would be afraid to wrestle me but afraid to debate? If he is clearly the man of great stature and experience then why would he be afraid of little ole OZ? Hint...Highest unemployment rate in the state, lowest per capita income, 100% pro-abortion, refused to look at any evidence in impeachment trial, worst record in state for small businesses NFIB scorecard, coal industry in worst shape in 18 yrs, tobacco farmers lost 67% of quota in last 3 years, against prayer in school, 1000 jobs lost in Smyth Co. in last 2 yrs, 6 vacant shell buildings in coal fields for years and now 53 other buildings that used to employ SW Virginians now vacant as well...and to think he just voted himself a raise (We have paid the honorable millionare 2.5 mil over the last 18 yrs). Maybe, just maybe it is time to change the coach! But what do I know.

I am sure that people are tired of all of the ambiguous goals and rhetoric, that is why we need a new representative for the 9th District. If Boucher is has done so much, why is southwest Virginia still lowest in the state for income, highest in the state for unemployment? He runs on his economic record, but look around, it is nothing to brag about.
As far as abortion and the death penalty, the difference is guilt and innocence. One is an innocent person who has a right to life under the Constitution of the United States, the other is a convicted murderer.

Oz seemed like a nice enough fellow, but I'm getting pretty tired of all these Republicans using ambiguous goals and rhetoric like "more jobs". Boucher has brought thousands of jobs over the years, due in large part to his stature and experience. How's old Ozzy going to bring them in? Because he's a nice guy? Because he was a wrestler? Because he is a big fan of Jerry Fallwell? All sizzle. No steak.

Oh good. Another person who thinks women can't decide for themselves whether or not to have abortions (I thought Republicans were all about little government), and who thinks it's perfectly fine for an institution to kill people. Does anyone know how much money we could save by abolishing the death penalty? It costs 6 times as much as life imprisonment. BOUCHER IN 2000!
