The World Wrestling Federation (WWF) is one of the top wrestling
companies in the business. Every week, their shows win the "ratings
war" among the wrestling shows.
How did they accomplish this? To
compete with the rival company, WCW (World Championship Wrestling) WWF
changed its format to a more hardcore, adult-oriented show. The show
usually contains harsh language, violent acts, and some
sexually-oriented content.
I have no problem with WWF having a hard-core, adult-oriented show.
That is their right to do so. The problem I see is with the thousands
of children that watch every week. Young kids always fill the audience
for every show. That doesn't even account for all of the children
watching on TV. WWF supposedly airs "adult-oriented" shows, yet
kids watch it all of the time.
I also have a problem with WWF's marketing strategies geared
towards kids. There are toy lines, clothing lines, and much more...AND
THIS IS A SHOW FOR ADULTS!? It is the ultimate hypocracy. I don't know
if this is out of pure ignorance or if they think people aren't
intelligent enough to see whats really going on.
WWF either needs to return to a more soft-core format and reach an
audience that includes children, or keep it hardcore and stop their
hypocritical marketing methods. I have a feeling that we'll never
see a change as long as Vince McMahon and the WWF feel they need to use
these strategies just to get their ratings.

Sounds like John wants some quality in his fake testosterone-filled nonsence. Well, John I've got another sign for you to hold up.

Just a note following up the last post, I will be attending Wrestlemania, this sunday, March 28 from Philadelphia Pennsylvania. It looks to be perhaps the worst Wrestlemania lineup in history, but I will be there, and I will have a Radford University sign.

I totally agree with the comments in this article. I think that Vince McMahon has been a hypocrite for years, by claiming that he does not market to kids. Vince always places the blame on the parents. He doesn't seem to realize that regardless of what parents do, some children are still going to watch. He would like to believe that he doesn't target towards children, but he knows that he can't. Vince has used this wrestling business in every way, shape and form, and created a mockery of the business in the mid-to-late 1990's. His father is perhaps rolling over in his grave, while once-legends Bruno Sammartino and Lou Thesz are wondering what they worked so hard for all those years.

The recent attempt to crucify the Big Boss Man on Raw is just a perfect example of what the article is addressing. Not only is it sac-religious to show a crucifiction, it's just sick.

Hey, instead of teaching your kids the duality of right and wrong, why not teach them to think and decide things for themselves. Sometimes we forget to teach kids the importance of critical thinking ability if favor of the easier- it's wrong because I say it's wrong.

To the previous comment regarding Wrestling's effect on children-- I would recommend you snatch your kids from the TV and teach them right from wrong. There will always be stupid people who enjoy doing stupid things. Wrestling's been around since before this century, and despite the hyped-up circus acts that they are, they are still around, and will be for quite some time. So, buckle up, get a helmet, and quit your bitching.

Good Article

I think it's perfectly ok to comment about other people beliefs and likes, especially if they are about wrasslin'. It doesn't make them any more biased than anyone who expresses their opinions about anything. That is the whole point of expressing your opinions you know. If we didn't critize stupid wastes of time, New Kids on the Block might still be popular. Wait a second, they still are; we just call them the Backstreet Boys. Whoops, my bad. You're right, whoever that was who critized wresslin' in a biased idiot who needs some good beatin'!

Anybody who knows enough about this dumb shit to post is fucking high or fucking stupid.

It sounds as if the person that commented about people knowing or not knowing wrestling if fake, doesn't like wrestling so his comments seem biased. Several people are wrestling fans and no one should put them down or their interest just because that person doesn't share the same interest.
Also, I know when I was a little kid, I thought wrestling was real and I think a lot of younger kids probably think its real too.

Good point about WCW. They aren't angels either, they just aren't as bad. WCW is using the "mystery girl," Torri Wilson to sex up the show a bit and they went a little overboard with the Ric Flair beating in the field a couple of weeks ago. So really, both companies at some level are at fault in the matter, but if you watch the two and compare, you will see a difference.
Comments:
This article is kind of odd to me. Is the author suggesting that the WCW is more apropiate for children? Wrestling in general is a huge waste of time, for kids and adults. Everytime I flip past it, I take a moment to watch the audience and reflect sadly on how pathetic it all is. Even if 1/20th of the people in attendence thought that what is happening is real, that is way too many people. And even beyond that, if the people who know it is a bunch of fake nonsence are still that excited about something that know is fake, then that raises some serious questions about what other judgement calls they would make. (Remember, at least a few of these people vote!) I had hoped to see the death of professional wrestling in my lifetime, but it really preplexless me to learn that it is larger than ever, thanks to slick marketing. If we are going to allow marketing/pr people to indoctronate our kids into mindless wrestling fans, I don't see why would we all of a sudden become concerned about them and try to protect them from sex or profanity. They already have gotten good social indronation in voilence, and to me that is the worst marketing to children there is. I would rather have my kid having sex and smoking pot than wearing a N.W.O. T-shirt and mindlessly spouting off about how he wants to "take down" some other kids for back talking to him.

Several people associated with WCW are completely against the way WWF is running their organizition. WCW President, Eric Bischoff feels that WWF is very hyprocritical when it comes to their younger viewers too. Wrestlers Sting and Brett Hart won't even let their kids watch the show. Brett Hart said this when he was still in WWF. The hardcore format is one of the many reasons why he left WWF. He didn't want to be any part of something that could be a bad influence on kids.
