RU's Walker Technology Center

by CHRISTOPHER HOLLOMON

The Walker Technology Center is Radford's new power house of computer labs designed for your convenience. The Center offers brand new machines in five labs and a classroom with an overhead projector.

The labs offer a lot of software and hardware that people are unaware of. CD burners, color scanners, color printers, and Zip drives are among the improvements. They have also decided to hold free workshops that will cover topics such as "Adobe Photoshop" and "Fundamentals on the Mac".

The labs consist of four PC rooms and an Apple lab with new GA systems. The new labs are a major improvement over labs that used to be located in Miffed. "Some students were upset when we took the labs out of Moffett because they were moving in to that dorm because there was a lab there," said Jason Bayers, supervisor of the center. "These are much better then the old ones, plus they're open longer...and the help desk is downstairs so they can fix problems much faster."

Ed Oakes is the Assistant Director of Client Services and is currently pushing to get the labs open 24hrs.

Below is a detailed description of each lab.

The Walker Technology Center, located on the second floor of Walker Hall offers five state-of-the-art computer labs. Together, these labs hold over 110 computers. These labs are open to Radford University Students, Faculty, and staff. The center offers access to the internet as well as a wide variety of course software, word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, graphics programs, HTML editors, and post script printing. The center also offers Laser printing, Color Laser Printing, Flatbed color scanners, digitizing video, CD-ROM burners, and Zip drives. Students are required to bring their own media (floppies, Zip, and CD-ROM disks) to save information on their own. Click here for the Center's hours.

Walker 216 also has the software listed in the above lab description. In addition, Walker 216, has an overhead projector and wireless keyboard for use in teaching computer oriented classes.

Walker 221 offers Pentium-based machines and both LaserJet and color LaserJet printing. Unique to this lab is a CD-RW, which allows for anyone to create their own CD's for academic purposes. It also has equipment that allows digitizing video. (Media must be provided by the individual and must follow copyright laws). Color scanners are also provided in this lab.
