With the popularity of "Sim City" rising, Eidos Interactive's "Gangsters" was
inevitable. Imagine being the head of the fiercest, the most powerful crime family in the little town of New Temperance, Illinois. Here's the deal: You run the show. You run the business. What a game!!
"Gangsters" is somewhat difficult to play. There are so many options in the
game, (much like Sim City), that it is difficult to get around at first. I just
recently got a chance to try it out, and I am still getting the hang of it.
Options like talking to people on the street, buying out corrupt officers of the
law (cops, judges, FBI, you name it) and making or breaking alliances are just a
few examples of the power you have as a mob boss.
You can delegate tasks to trusted lieutenants or give orders to individual hoods. Have your best buttonman take out the mayor. After all, he's just getting in your way, right? Want to knock off a witness who claims they saw you cap a mob boss? Send your most trusted man to do the dirty work. This game pays close attention to the details and structure of organized crime families.
Be sure to check out the movie that plays before the actual game. It's a throw-
back news bulletin reviewing the flux of gangster influence in the small
(imaginary) town of New Temperance. Those with weak stomachs should probably
skip through this lead movie. There are movie shorts scattered throughout the
game after completing various tasks. It is obvious that the designers had fun
paying attention to the details of gangster life. Being a fan of gangster-
esque films, I've come to notice many patterns in clothing, language, and even
furniture of the time period. "Gangsters" is consistent with that theme, which
impresses me even more.
I have been looking for a simulation game that would peak my interest. Eidos
Interactive has made my day. If you're a gangster fan, and you've got a PC with
Windows 95 or 98, 32 megs of RAM, a CD-ROM, and Direct X 6 (available at microsoft.com), you too can kill, fight and bribe your way to the top!
