Site Review: Dynamic Drive

by RACHEL THOMASON

Dynamic Drive is "the premier place on the net to obtain free, original DHTML scripts and components to enhance your web site!" DHTML is the name used by both Netscape and Microsoft to describe a new technique making web pages more interactive. Using DHTML, developers can make their pages change their look without having to reload.

The free scripts available on this site are divided up into nine categories. The first, Menus and Navigation Systems, offer to "enhance your site's navigability" by using collapsible menus and sliding bars. The second, Special document effects, lets you create a static (non-tiling) background image, have slide transitions from page to page, and frame a document. The Scrollers section has tricks for pausing and fading text as well as rotating it. The Image Effects division gives you scripts that can pop images up, blend a slide show into the document, and slowly degrade images. Image Effects also features the script seen on Geocities' sites which places a logo on the page that moves as the user scrolls. The Links and Buttons part creates pop up information boxes, image maps, hot keys, and mouseovers. The other sections, Dynamic Clocks and Dates, Text Animations, and Browser Window [tricks] do exactly what their title says. The last section, Other, contains a mixture of games, layer options, cursor scripts, functional calculators, print buttons, glowing tables, viewer trackers and a text link underline remover. (I've use this one to make my page look cleaner.)

All the scripts available on Dynamic Drive were written using JavaScript 1.2. Generally they are compatible with Netscape 4.0 +, Explorer 4.0 +, or both. Those not using a compatible browser will simply see nothing. Each script has a description of what it does and a demo to see it in action. The directions for downloading are simple. It shows you what text to copy and where to paste it. It doesn't get any easier than this!

One more feature I would like to comment on is their script Wizard. Certain scripts labeled with this, have the ability for the user to choose certain options. It will then generate your personalized script.

Dynamic Drive also offers links to other development sites.

See what others have had to say about Dynamic Drive!

-"This site is truly one of a kind. Thanks for the great service!" -Scott Szczecina

-"As a JavaScript lover, I can say this site is better than any other site of it's kind out there..." -John Wiley
