Digital Cable In Radford

by: RACHEL THOMASON

Introducing the wave of the future that plans to tower over what we know as cable television: It's called Digital Television, and its capabilities far surpass what we've seen thus far. Quite simply, it's "digital TV without the dish!"

Using fiber-optic technology, this digital concept converts broadcast signals into incredibly small data that will provide up to 200 more channels. 40 channels will be devoted to music, while others will show special interest programs and movies. Check out some sample channels planed by an area company here. (look for "Channel Line-up")

Along with ensuring a clearer picture, Digital Television will also facilitate high-speed Internet access. This means no more plugging your phone line into your computer and waiting for a slow dial-up connection. It's all done through the cable! Gary McCollum, of Cox Communications, said the connection is "hundreds of times faster."

So what does this mean for the average consumer? The good news is you won't have to buy a new TV. Your old cable box will be replaced by some companies at no extra charge. The bad news is that prices (as always) will go up. Here are examples of Cox's current prices for this new service.

Digital Deluxe includes: ($12.95 / month)

Movie Package
Sports & Information Package
Variety Package

Digital with choice of 1 Package: ($7.95 / month)

Movie Package
Sports & Information Package
Variety Package

* Cox Limited Service required to subscribe.
** Monthly charge is in addition to existing service; premium channels, equipment, tax and franchise fees not included.

Digital Cable also offers more parental control for households with small children and has channel search capabilities. This technology is expected to hit Radford City as early as this summer. There is no word yet on whether the University will participate in this program.
