"Wyld Stallions"- When you go to their show, you figure out why they must have chosen that name for
themselves. Hard core girls playing hard core stuff with notable precision.
Penny, lead vocals, is more than just lead vocals. Her almost military
crew cut short blonde hair moused up, defies gravity as we know it. Red
flannel thrashes around her thin body as the scorching vocals crash out from within her. A real quake rumbles the club.
Bonnie Pivacek, on lead guitar, can play. Her extreme talent and
confidence take the front row.
Antoinette is an intense drummer and not a bad singer either. She proved her versatility when she came up and took over lead vocals for the song "Boots." The band did an innovative cover of the old song, giving it a definite hard edge, "punkrokgurl" style. "Wyld Stallions" only played about six songs because there were two other bands playing after them. That did not slow them down any or take away their effect.
Penny has such a powerful charismatic character. One guy up front accidentally knocked over her beer, spilling it. After the song was over, she squelched at him and his buddies, "YOU SPILLED MY BEER YOU ASSHOLES! I WANT ANOTHER ONE!" I was waiting for the guys to wet themselves, cry, etc. But instead, one asked "What were you drinking?" Sounding like a little girl who just got her brother in trouble, she calmly said "NewCastle." A new beer replaced the spilled on in a matter of seconds.
Since The Melting Pot, on Campbell Avenue, is a fairly small club in a fairly small city, the crowd was just that, small and familiar. Not like being in a huge "dance-ateria" somewhere on the west coast. The crowd was mostly younger people, some over 21 folks were there as well. There was truly a variety of people present. It was a nice mix of different, "genres" of people, if you will. You had your hard core, black leather-wearing, mohawk- thrashing punks, but you also had your average, blend-in type of people too. Girls and guys, young and old. What a nice change of pace.
