"I like you."
"And I like you."
"So what do we do?"
"I dunno."
Sound familiar? Where to go on a date is a question many Radford couples
ask themselves. I have a few pointers for you, and assuming you haven't already clicked
the "back" button, I will also assume that you're curious.
The first thing you should remember is that any hesitation you feel about where
to go or what to do is totally natural. Remember though, that a good date is
someone with whom you feel comfortable, so when you meet up, hopefully your
trepidations and awkward feelings can simmer down a bit.
Another thing to consider is that no matter where you go, or what you do, there
is one thing it should have in common-- you do it together. Whether you're
cleaning your dirty laundry or dining at a fine restaurant, it is the
togetherness that is vital to a good date. Through thick and thin, if you
don't have each other, you've got nothing more than a travelling buddy.
So what is there to do here in Radford? Plenty. And if you two truly enjoy
one another's company, the list of things to do can be as extensive as your
imagination.
Ever been down to the river? The New River is ironically the oldest river in
the hemisphere. Bring that up with your date, and start some conversation.
Don't be shy. You can get to the river from many points, but the best I've
found are:
The Dedmon Center
Nothing is more relaxing than walking along the river down by Dedmon. Take a
lunch and sit on the tables there, or lay out a blanket and picnic wherever you
want. The best time of day is around 3 p.m. when the ducks settle, or in the
evening when the sun sets.
Bissett Park
By far my favorite, Bissett is located just beyond Video Update in Radford.
Bissett is home to plenty of wildlife, and has a walking trail, tennis courts,
swimming pools, and shelters for outdoor parties. Take some time down there
during the day, and just enjoy each other in the atmosphere.
Getting the hint yet? It's not what you do, it's how you do it. If you do it
together, you're doing it right. Want some other ideas? See if these work for
you:
Radford's campus- Ask 85 percent of the students here what factors
they considered in coming to RU, and "the pretty campus" will be tops. It
shouldn't surprise then, that walking the campus would be scenic. The weather
is starting to get nice. Try hanging around the fountain and sitting on the
benches.
The NRV Mall- Sure, it isn't glamorous, but the shops and people are
always good for conversation starters. Walk around. You can spend an hour or
two without spending a penny.
Route 81- Wow. Route 81. Sounds like fun, dude. Truth is,
something as simple as a road trip is a perfect way to spend some time with one
another. Take it North to Roanoke and see the sites, or South to see how time
really slows down.
The Mill Mountain Star- Cheesy, huh? Make-out spot, huh? Quite the
contrary. The view of Roanoke from atop Mill Mountain is spectacular, and one
you should not miss. You can bring your camera, but the mental photographs you
take will be so much greater, especially if you spend time with someone special.
If you have dating tips, submit them below. I am by no means an expert. I do
think the key to a good date is the company you have. Enjoy it, savor it, and
it will be forever
precious.

if you're looking for a nice place to have dinner with a scenic view (and no, i don't mean the view of kroger from the back window of mcdonald's), try the Mountainview Italian Kitchen in Ironto, VA. it's a great family owned italian restaurant with wonderful pasta and pizza, and a great view of ellett valley (a beautiful part of the area).

The Biltmore Estate, otherwise known as the "Biltmore House," was the home of the legendary Vanderbilt family. It's called the largest house in America, flaunting 250 rooms, 65 fireplaces, 43 bathrooms, incredible gardens, a bowling alley, and a 70,000 gallon indoor pool. I think tickets range from $25-$30. Here's the website for more information:

You can't leave this area w/o going to the TEXAS TAVERN downtown Rke, open 24-7, NO KETCHUP, only mustard (hehee) its an historical landmark and it's one heck of an experience, ask Tbear:) Mill Mt Star is best at night. Wasena park is good for rollerblading, strolling, this is also where all the homosexual men sit in their cars to wait and hook up,but they wont bother you:) If you love to dance, the best dancefloor in Rke is at THE PARK, on Salem Avenue downtown. It is a gay bar but all sorts of straight people go there b/c of the dancing. enjoy!

I'm from Rke. so I have some experience with what to do and what not to do.
ELMWOOD PARK downtown alongside Elm Ave. and Franklin Road is a gr8 place to chill, read to eachother, blah blah...you could also go to the new "DINNER THEATER" in Rke...on Franklin Rd. I think.
Go to the downtown MARKET on a nice Sat. afternoon. Vendors are out and its a neat thing to do. Go to the Rke ART MUSEUM its nice too! There is a Transportation museum also.
There are poetry slams on Wed nites @ the Mill Mt. coffee shop (Rke) and in Salem at "Wit's End".
FOR VEGANS: go to the WILDFLOWER CAFE at Crossroads mall (take VA. Western comm. college exit) or go to ANGLERS on 3rd Street downtown Rke.
RAM'S HEAD BOOKSTORE is also in Crossroad's mall.
Go to the GRANDIN THEATER on Grandin Rd. You WONT be disappointed, its an old atmospheric theatre, very avante garde. & if you know Barry Freese, he lives right there, go pester him after the movie:):) (just kidding)
hmmm...more when I think of 'em! :)

I think gay people have it best. Club Fusion is the best place in the area for nightlife.

Hey Brian, great article! I've found that taking a trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway, preferably the second or third week in October, and cruising on down to Western Carolina is a beautiful experience. You're bombarded with fall colors and breathtaking mountains, and along the way you can have a picnic. You can also visit sites along the Parkway like Mabry's Mill and Lover's Leap, which are both located in VA. The Biltmore Estate, located in Asheville, NC, is also highly recommended.

whoops, I mean "great first date place"...:)

Well, I wouldn't say it's a frat first date place, but Wal-Mart is a fun place to go with a friend. You know you've all done it. Those boring nights, with nothing to do. Two, three in the morning, with nothing better to do. You know what's fun? Buy a drink from the machine in automotives and sit on the lawn furniture in the garden area. :)
