Road Trip: Washington D.C.

By CHRIS HOLLOMON

Is every-day life at Radford getting you down? Do you feel the need to break the mold and ride off into the sunset like John Wayne? Does your money keep getting sucked away by beer and chips? Well I suggest you get off your tail, get in your car and drive, baby! Now the big question is: where to!? Whim has the solution. Each week here in the Life section, we will feature realistic weekend and weekday road trips.

This week, we suggest going to Washington D.C. It's a 4 1/2 - 5 hour trip that's definitely do-able for a weekend. There's lots to do in D.C. You can go to the Mall and the Smithsonian, or do the historic thing and go to the state buildings. There's always Georgetown, which I consider a real college town, and tons of great and unique shopping life. The food in D.C. is fantastic. Along Wisconsin Avenue, you'll find a restaurant I recommend named "Commander Salamander." The "Hawk and Dove" restaurant is great too-- I recommend the French Toast.

If the thought of parking in D.C. scares you, then I suggest the suburb of Alexandria, VA. Forget the hassle. Take the metro in. Find King and Queen street and park a few blocks away. There are some great bars and clubs there, plus some small shops and restaurants that are really neat.

Driving in D.C. can sometimes be a pain. I recommend finding a good parking spot and walking just about everywhere from there, especially if you plan to go to the Smithsonian. All in all, Washington D.C. is a great place to take a short road trip to.

Summary and Directions:

Distance From RU: 4.5-5 hours
Points on Interest: The Capital, The Smithsonian Museum, Georgetown, Alexandria
Cost: $10 gas, parking in Georgetown: $3 and Up
Dining: We suggest a picnic on the Mall or the various restaurants mentioned above
Lodging: Yahoo's Directory of Lodging in D.C.

Directions from Radford:
Get on 81 North until you hit exit 300 (Route 66 East). That will take you right into D.C.

Driving Tips:
If you think you're lost in DC, then you're probably where you need to be. As always, be safe and don't drink and drive.
