Over the course of the past decade, global warming has been a hot topic among scientists. Global warming was thought to be caused by the collection of burning fossil fuels, chemicals and other pollutants that wind up in our atmosphere. Recently, evidence has been presented which will disprove all theories. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has brought forth evidence which suggests that Chris Mannix, the president of the student body at Radford University, is the cause of global warming.
In a detailed 150-page report, the EPA stated that as a young child, Mannix received a device from aliens that emits a toxic radiation. It slowly absorbs a part of the delicate balance of a natural system that has taken billions of years to develop. Further information has revealed Chris Mannix purchased thousands of acres of land in the midwest. This is part of his plot
to melt the Arctic ice caps and raise the sea level.
Recent speculations support the idea that during an alien abduction, a very powerful and toxic device was given to Mannix in exchange for world domination. Sources on the inside confirm that Mannix agreed to be the new alien world order's government figurehead in exchange for
this device. Evidence supporting this theory includes the significant increase in the level of carbon dioxide and student leadership compensation during Mannix's presidency.
When the EPA questioned Mannix, he stated, "I just want to move out to the midwest with all of my Monopoly pieces [from last week's stolen Tartans.] I'm looking for anyone who has Park Place to match my Boardwalk, and I'll split the winnings 50/50."
Mannix also promised the owner of Park Place would receive beach-front property in the near future.
Rumor has it that the ATF and Secret Service plan on raiding his summer estate in the midwest and finding his Global Warming device. Officer Sergeant P. Rick, head of the ATF committee, said, "If all he needs is Park Place, that's definitely enough evidence to raid his summer estate."
THIS JUST IN: This missing ten votes were found in an abandoned gold mine somewhere in Utah. In response, Mannix said, "How many times must I win before it's finally over?"

I think some of the below feedback reactions make good points and raise important questions. Why didn't the Whim cover the Mannix situation until now? Was the former editor of the Whim the same reporter that Mannix allegedly threatened? And if so, how did that affect the Whim? Did the Whim run SGA propaganda under Mannix's name? What is the relationship with Whim, the SGA, and the Tartan? Why hasn’t Mannix attempted to clear his name by directly appealing to the students? What kind of budget has the Whim gotten during the Mannix tenure? What kind of growth has the Whim gone through during the Mannix tenure? Why hasn’t the Whim responded to any of these issues? What will be legacy of this episode in Radford’s history? Can we trust the Whim as journalism, or should we just enjoy it as cutesy sophomoric humor rag and a possible source for SGA promotional material? I call on the SGA to further redeem itself with the students and launch an investigation into this matter. These questions need answers if any student media can be trusted under the current regime.

The whim didn't cover the Mannix scandel because its editor at the time was the reporter threatoned by Mannix and, then I have a feeling the reason they didn't cover it after the new editor took over was because the new staff was chicken and didn't want to create controversy. They probably realized that by staying silent would be better is mannix came out with his presendency intact. This parody was safe. The writing wasn't funny. Someone please interview mannix about his presendency and write it as a story. Now, that is worth a read.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd just as soon let Tartan take on the newsworthiness and "unbiased" smearing of the SGA presidency. I wouldn't want to read an on-line magazine that is chock-full of scrutinizing dirt-digging interviews anyway. This issue of Mannix appears to be quite a hot one. Whim's parody of the issue appears to be exactly that...a parody. I applaud the author, P.J., and I applaud those offering feedback to these fora.
Interested in interviewing someone for an article for Whim? Try getting out from under that rock you're hiding and write your own article. That's what I do. That's what I recommend. :) I'm big into writing for Whim, and that's how I get my voice out there, not through anonymous postings where things are "safe" from your precious reputations. Try it. Whim usually posts the submissions they get. :) Send ideas or articles to Whim, and they'll let you know. :)

I don't 80% of the students even know we have an SGA, much less think that Mannix is a crook. Also, I wouldn't doubt if the Whim posted most of these messages themselves, especially the ones saying that this reaction was just the one they were looking for. At one point, it was said that this was great because it was laughing at the people who questioned mannix and now it is stated that the Whim was looking for some good dialouge about this. I doubt that. The whim had plenty of opertunity to do some serious reporting about all this, but didn't. Check it. The whim never reported about Mannix once. Then, they started running SGA stuff under his name until people complained. Now, the still run sga propaganda but without mannix's name. And finally this story. This story is a lot of things, but I doubt that it did what Whim wanted to do with it. I doubt the whim even knew what it wasted to do with it. It's easy to declare a vistory when you don't set pretty clear goals. Also, as a matter of humor this just wasn't very funny- no matter which side you are on. George Carlin this writer is not.

To the previous poster, I'd like you to do me the favor of presenting me the evidence to your claim that 80% of this campus hates Chris Mannix. Oh, wait, wait...I know...You've got it in your shed next to the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and your hopes to ever be someone more than a rebel-rousing piece of human garbage! Grow up a tad, huh? I'm glad they did it though. I never did like Mannix. The real irony here is that if Mannix ever gets real power over public policy one day, this story might come true. If all this happened at Radford, could you imagine what would happen if he ran for and actually WON a real office!?!

I'd just like to say that, although the SGA is an organization that serves little purpose and holds little power, the injustice and abuse of power that occurred within is what inspired us to cling to the principle of justice. Many of those at RU have made it clear that they just don't care. Do they mean to say that they just don't care about justice or fairness? We must stop looking at the world in such a material way and quit asking how something affects ourselves. Those students that chose to be brave and face the criticism, persecution, and threats stood for an important thing, truth. As for the man that called these few "stupid idiots", perhaps they were intelligent students who felt that it was essential to stop at nothing to have this travesty revealed. Consider that. The students at RU must be rid of their selfishness and ask what if they were in Redd's, Norman's, or even Bonfanti's shoes!!! All of us at RU should take extreme offense at what Mannix, the electoral board, the SGA, and the RU administration did. Those that put the time and energy into this cause are not "trouble makers" or "leader chasers", but sojourners of truth. I agree that efforts should have been made to put Mannix in the spotlight and have him answer those questions that are so important to so many people. True, this controversy did carry on for a very long time, but only because no questions were answered, no action was taken, and no true effort was made by the SGA or administration to get to the roots of the problem. The outcome of the situation was a perfect example of politics at its worst. Those that were in power saw that "their man" was in office, that the situation was taken care of handily, and even made attempts to see that those that opposed him were silenced, swept under the rug, and even sraightjacketed for the future. By the way, I don't know who is claiming that those who fought for this cause were alumni because that is simply not true. There were only five, count them, five people on this campus that chose to face the music that is being blared on this website. These people were not particularly supporters of Redd or Mannix, they just wanted to see justice prevail and politics not live up to its reputation. Jim feels that he "could care less the outcome of last year's election. It's over. I'm (along with many other students) sick of hearing about it." That, much like Dr. Covington's is a great reason to let such an injustice happen. Sure, what's the point of having elections. We should have just given the presidency to Mannix, told Redd to go home, and told Bonfanti and friends to shut up. That's fair.
Comments:
You know, I am pretty indifferent about all this. I couldn't care less about the politics of the sga- basically a self serving social committee at best. However, I am intruiqed and alarmed at all the negative reaction directed towards the people who raised charges against Mannix. Read down through these comments. You will find two branches of thought- those who support those few students who brought questions against mannix and his possable corruption and the second thought who is to slam those people who would question Mannix. If Mannix is all sweet and innocent and all that, then why do people feel the need to visously defend him and his legacy by attacking the people who would question his activities and possably expose some of his very disturbing behavior? What is there to hide? And are so many students still so adamit about getting poeple NOT to talk about this? Thank God for the Whim though. I was afraid that this issue would just die and be forgotten. It's great that we get a forum to discuss it- indefinitly. As one of the other people said, this is a dark chapter in RU history, but it is one that really needs to be discussed.

Isn't some of this stuff libel againts Mannix? I thought the whim was going to carry anything that libeled or invaded privacy, and I even heard that this policy started with some comments a few weeks aho that might have libeled mannix. So, now that this story has run, what is satire and defamation of charector? Seems to me, we can say whatever we want to about Mannix under this story and not be liable, but the whim opened the door. What a mess.
Comments:
Many of the people who fought against Mannix are now alumni- just as Mannix will be in a few months. What's the big concern if they do continue to critisize this dark chapter in RU's history? I would be appalled at everything that happened- regardless of enrollment status- Also, how do you know any of the people who posted to this board are alumni? And what does it matter? I wonder how many of the messages like the one critisizing alumni were actually posted by Mannix or his cronies. After this past year, I don't know what to believe- other than to keep a skeptical eye on the Whim.

One year I saw a lot of Chris Mannix when he was regularly visiting fraternity brothers of his at my place. He came off cocky at first but after a while he seemed like a nice guy. But then I began to realize that he was a weasel. He was all for himself and lied all the time. I remember once he stole one of our phones and we had to demand that he bring it back. He acted as if he owned the place. He was the kind of guy that you would never want to have to count on because he would turn on you in a second. And the reality behind whatever public image he's selling is that he is a very small man who only cares about image and money. I've heard him talk about politics and that was all he talked about was the "politics", not what he could get done for people. His hero is Ted Kennedy. He talks about women as if they are children. He's a weasel and a mama's boy.

Name: Joe Shmoe Comments:
You know what bothers me about all this? Throughout the whole process- from the first allegations to the last attempt at impeachment, I have not read once were Chris Mannix has just adressed the students of Radford and said something like, "Listen, I didn't do it. I believe I won that election fair and square. I didn't threaton that reporter. I want to do a good job for Radford and want you to have trust in me." Something like that, even though it would have not done much good in the long run, it would have been nice to see. All I remember reading was something about how did make "comments" to the reporter but they weren't meant as threats. If I were him, as soon as the allegations hit, I would have gone straight to the students- written a letter to the editor, put a webpage together, anything. In fact, I don't recall Chris communicating with the students directly much at all. It was rather a do-nothing presidency. I guess we should all be pretty thankful that whatever corruption and malfesince of office that did take place didn't (if any) didn't drag down the whole school with it. The real irony of this story isn't that mannix was so bad that he would ruin the enviroment, but here is a president that barely managed to put together a few little programs and keep himself from being tossed out being blamed for something of the worldly importance. Thank God its all overwith. What do we even need a SBA for anyway?

I wonder how we can tell what is serious information on here and what is puff pieces for the friend's of Whim staffer organization- like that animal rights thing and the snowboarding club.
