The SGA issues forum was held Thursday, January 29 in the Virginia room
of Heth. The SGA Issues Forum is an open forum of a student leader
panel and a vocal student audience. The goal of the forum is to field
questions and concerns from the student body and to make their concerns
heard to the panel, in hopes that the panel can relay the concerns to
policy makers.
The Issues Forum facilitator, Lauren Estes, introduced the mostly
student panel including SGA president, Chris Mannix, Dean of Students,
Bonnie Hurlburt, four additional SGA members, and representatives from
the student media and senate.
Thursday's topic was off-campus issues. Jen Kurtz, representing the
Off-Campus Student Council, fielded many questions regarding apartment
security, room deposits, storage, noise violations and many others.
There was concern about apartment break-ins during holiday breaks.
"Every break we have a break in" Kurtz said.
After the topic of off-campus housing was addressed, the panel opened up
the floor to any topic. Issues regarding student parking were
discussed. As the night went on, the now animated panel engaged in a
interactive brainstorm with one another regarding ways to improve the
"downtown" area of Radford on Norwood Street. The issue of bus system
improvement on campus was raised and discussed.
The issues forum is designed to help students make a difference both on
and off campus. Look for fliers this February for the upcoming forum.
Come, have some pizza, and make a difference.

Actually, one of the issues raised at this last forum was the lack of technology in the Art department. SGA was very helpful in contacting the student representative, who in turn, contacted me and asked for specific details. She then took those details to the department heads--and they are the ones who get things done. I felt that the issue was not only heard, but addressed in a swift manner. I was impressed. Doubters, come to the next one and prove me wrong.

"90% of the articles we run criticize our own university" Yet, I criticize the WHIM for trying to supress comments about the SGA, and THAT document is cesored. If you would like to read the censored document and judge its merrits for yourself, email me at scottcloud@hotmail.com Please state your preference of whether you would like it in html or pure text.

"Come, have some pizza, and make a difference." Yep, Mike is right- that's some good objective journalism! I don't blame my fellow students for not showing up. Most of the stuff we have to complain about- the SGA couldn't do anything about even if they were worth a damn.

to who it may concern. I know this article reads very fluffy. The truth is Brian and I went to this forum together and we were impressed. WHIM runs the good news with the bad news. This article just happends to be good news. Niether the author nor myself have any reason to kiss ass. If the next issue forum sucks he will report it that way. WHIM provides a forum for people that want to air thier issues. What we can't always do is solve the issues. This forum that SGA provides is trying to take steps to do what we can't. Now you can bracket all the publications together and call are journalism "puff", thats fine. I can't comment on Tartan articles. As for WHIM, I think it would be fair to ask why we would run a article like this. If you are a weekly reader of WHIM, you will notice that 90% of the articles we run criticize our own university. Our articles are not written by one voice, they are written by many students that all have thier own problems and concerns. We ran this article because the WHIM management attended this forum to air our reader's concerns. Unfortunatly student turnout was very poor. By looking at our forums you will see that lots of students like to bitch and moan but I guess few want to try to fix things. This article is an advertisement to get students to take action.

God, what a puff piece! Could the writer be kissing any more ass? I am sick of reading this kind of "journalism" in the Tartan and now the Whim. If I wanted this stuff, I would read the flyers in Heth or hang out in the Allen Building. Is there no real news at Radford?

From the story above: "The issues forum is designed to help students make a difference both on and off campus. Look for fliers this February for the upcoming forum. Come, have some pizza, and make a difference." My question is how much of the stuff suggested by students is enacted? This sounds to me like it could be a way for the students to feel like they have a say by suggesting ideas and complaining about others, then nothing substative is actully done. Show me the results.

What happened to all that feedback written in the SGA news section about corruption and cencorship by Whim. Is this page were we can comment about the SGA or would we be censored here too.

I have a question about Ingles...Is that going to be wheelchair accessible? Or are we going to make another mistake here and have to end up retro-fitting it a few years down the road at RU's expense?

I attended this forum. I found it very informative. The sga leadership was very receptive to student ideas and followed up on them afterwards.
