Today I ran into a problem that happens every year and it isn't getting any better. I was going down the ramp with my wheelchair in front of Davis and Young. As I was going down, a student came racing up the ramp on their bicycle and almost ran into me. I had my hands full which made even more difficult. I was able to stop and an accident was avoided, but the incident should not have even happened in the first place.
The ramps are there for people who need them. It is their only option in some cases. If you look at the top and bottom of the ramps there are even signs that say not to ride up and down them with your bicycles and skateboards. Please take those signs into consideration.
The other day, one student actually got off their bicycle and carried it down the steps. I was amazed but I shouldn't have been. It should be a regular occurrence. It is just a matter of respect for people who need to use the ramps. That includes people pushing strollers and carts along with people using wheelchairs. No one is saying that these individuals own the ramps, no one does. They should however be given the right of way. If everyone can just learn to share the ramps, we can all be happy and avoid any unnecessary accidents.

This comment is in response to J. Scott Summey's accussation that skaters act like they're in middle school. There are many more skaters who respect the needs of others than there are who don't. I for one stay off of the ramps and away from people during times when there is alot of traffic. Not all of us are self-centered bad-asses who believe the concrete was made for us. If you have a problem with a skater, talk to him, don't criticize him. You response is full of name calling when you should offer some solutions. Don't be part of the problem.

Ramps are for people who need them, bottom line. Violators should have their brains bashed in with a baseball bat! This includes those "skaters" who think they're still in middle school. Hey guys, grow up! Instead of using the ramps, try executing one of those "cool" moves like sliding down a rail or something.

I think you make a great point, but I use the ramp to walk up. A lot of people do. So if they just keep bikes off the ramp, then everything should be cool, right?
