Access Denied

by JACK VASVARY

Most buildings are accessible on this campus. A few have even been made accessible since I came here as a freshman. This is a good start but there are buildings that still are not accessible to all students. Many students I know live in Pocahontas Hall. I would like to visit them but I can't because I am in a wheelchair. There are steps at every entrance into the building and there's no possible way to get in with a wheelchair. Even if one could get help into the building there are still steps leading to the elevator. Something needs to be done about this. Pocahontas and all of the other buildings should be accessible to all people. An able-bodied person could assist someone in a wheelchair into the building but that is not their job to do so. It's also not the other person's job to ask someone for assistance. They should be able to enter and exit the building as they please.

One possible solution to this problem could be to build a ramp at one of the entrances. It should not be that hard to build a ramp going into the building. Floyd Hall built one since I have been here. It would be most beneficial to build a ramp for Pocahontas Hall in front of the entrance facing Bolling Hall. This would avoid the steps inside the building near the elevator. Hopefully, something will be done about this in the near future so all faculty, students, and visitors with disabilities can enter all buildings on campus.

Jack- Have you tried addressing the President's office or the Tartan with this problem? That would be a good way to get yourself heard.

Anyone that has had Mick Stewart's LESE 219 class is on your side. For one day we have to experience what it is like to use a wheelchair. Up until that day I never realized how much of a pain it is to go from Peters to Dalton just to eat. You have to go out the backside of Peters, go around the building, through Heth Plaza, and then you have the choice of going up the super ramp in front of Dalton or using the bookstore entrance to take the elevator. People that can use the steps take it for granted. Moffett is not wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp in the back at one door, but that is to make it easier for the Coke man to refill the machines. Those are just a few of the things I experienced in my one short day. I don't even want to mention what it is like when I left the campus. I don't think I have seen any accessible apartment buildings or houses. If I was to break my leg and be wheel chair bound, I would be at my realtor's office reminding them about the ADA. Which makes me wonder why I should wait only until it serves my purpose and not let them know now....

I'm with you. A ramp is imperative.

Right on, Jack! You know, I did not even realize the fact that Pocahontas Hall is inaccessible until I went around gathering stats on all the dorms last week. I noticed and the first thing that came to my mind was "Hey! wait a minute! What about JACK?! So many of our friends live in Pokie and he has no way to get inside or to the elevator!" I also noticed the steps that are on the first floor. It hit me hard...made me angry. Somebody needs to get with it!

Well said, Jack. It is about time this school woke up and smelled the 90's. Good morning Radford, wake up and realize that you are STILL WAY BEHIND!!!
