I know most of you when you read the title to this article probably
thought to yourself, "Oh poor little blond girl, life's so hard for
them!" But really, it's not as great as people think. Blondes don't
necessarily have more fun. Especially if they don't fit into the blond
stereotype.
I am a natural blond, but I am as far away from being "blond" as one
can get. I don't get my spending money from daddies wallet. I am not a
slut. As a matter of fact I believe in waiting until marriage. I
graduated high school with a 3.0. I am not an air head, and I have
been told that I have a quick wit. But even though I have these
qualities, I still get treated as an air head by strangers just because
of my hair color.
I worked in Spencer's for a year and it seemed like everyone who
came in loved to get the "Blond Jokes" book and tell them to me.
Har Har
Har very funny.
I also had several customers seek out other employees to
ask them questions even though I was standing right there. People tend
to think that young blond females don't know what they are talking
about. I still don't like taking my car to a garage because when I tell
the mechanics what I think I need or is wrong they just look at me like I
have tapioca for brains and say, "Well we'll just see lil' lady."
Sometimes my non-blonde friends even make anti-blond statements in front
of me. Usually they do something that was absent-minded and they will
say "gee you would think I was blond." Then they realize whose company
they are in and they turn to me and say, "No offense Charlene."
But why do people have this image of blondes? I think there are
several reasons. First of which being Marilyn Monroe. She was the blonde bomb-shell. However, she acted and talked like a baby. She was not known for
her intelligence. In reality, she was an intelligent and deep
person. And most important of all, Marilyn was not even a real blonde!
The second major contributing factor is that body-image-ruining doll
known as Barbie. We all know how Barbie is. Talking Barbie's best line
is "let's go shopping." Barbie has spent the last 40 or so years
stalking Ken, and she hasn't had the insight that he just isn't
interested or they would have been married by now. One thing
about the whole Barbie Ken thing, however, is that Barbie does seem to have a kid.
So this would again contribute to the whole Blond slut factor.
But
anyway, I digress. It is time that people stop holding stereotypes to
anyone, not just blondes. Also it would be nice if the nice people at
Mattel changed Barbie to reflect a more realistic body and
attitude type.

Good article, Charlene! You are so right, people are very quick to judge others based on appearance. If they only knew how often they are wrong! keep up the good writing my fellow WHIM-BOT!!
