Trendy or Indie?

by AIMEE FRANCO

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the entire Independent music industry has become the latest trend in the past couple years? It is getting to where there is no such thing as genuine INDEPENDENT anything. All the posers out there have decided that it is cool to listen to offbeat, artistic stuff. Now when I walk into any record store, I see everything under the sun on the racks.

I don't see anything wrong with selling CDs but it used to be kind of a special thing for me to go to the Record Exchange and order Operation Ivy CDs or tapes by The Pogues...now they are sitting around everywhere. One big part of the Indie music scene is the ethic behind it. Indie stands for working for the true fans, making music with a message, usually addressing the political and/or sociological problems in the world...that is what I think of first when I hear the word, "Indie".

Those "DANCE-ATERIA TYPES" that latch onto every trend don't have the first idea about the actual roots of what they are chucking out bucks for. I think The Dead Milkmen said it best in their song "You'll Dance to Anything":

Oh, baby look at you, don't you look like Siouxie Soux? How long did it take for you to look that way? What a terrible waste of energy; What a terrible waste of energy; You wear black clothes and say you're poetic, the sad truth is youčre just pathetic. So get into the groove and get out of my way; I came here to drink not to get laid so why don't you just go on home, if you want to moan you'll have to moan alone! Dončt try and tell me that youčre an intellectual, cuz youčre just another boring bisexual! "I MET ANDY WORHAL AT A REALLY SHEIK PARTY," Blow it out your hair-do cuz you work at HARDEES! Eighty pounds of makeup on your art school skin, eighty pounds of IQ located within......

All I've got to say is I hope that all you posers out there would get a life and use your brains if you are going to dilute my subculture! Know what you listen to and know why it is out there! Stop throwing out band names just to make light of the fact that you are a PSEUDO-ROCKER and only listen to Ska because that is what is popular NOW. It has been around for a long time. So have a CLUE...buy a copy!!!!

Well, being trendy has always been something that I make fun of people for. A trend is fine if it is warrented ie: the public likes it genuinely, instead of people liking it to be cool. Liking something because it is trendy is nearly the most ignorant thing a person can do. Pretending to have allegiance to something that you have no idea about, just because your so-called friends do, is ridiculous. You mentioned Ska is trendy, well, that is probably because, simply, Ska is good. I have liked ska for about 4 years now, it has a swing characterisitc that I enjoy,(I have liked swing for 19 years). Music is one of the most important things in my life, and I do not wish to live without it. Music, like poetry, (and is often poetry), is different for different people. You do not always have to know the roots to enjoy a song. It may help, but is not needed. If people like music, let them like it.

Valid points by all parties concerned. I kinda like the fact that my favorite music is SO much easier to find now a days but its also a shame that its become such a money grubbing trendy type scene!Oh well I guess me and my bro are gonna have to form that Industrial/Country band after all!! Hey Oh Lets Go!!

Well I must agree to annoyed to a certain extent in that I listen to music that appeals to me much like anyone else on the face of the planet however I do realize that when these "underground" scenes are unleashed that lose a lot of what they used to hold. Look at a lot of your mainstream bands such as Green Day and The Bosstones for example. Old Green Day was awesome such as earyl Bosstone albums. Now that they've been tredged out and placed on radio scenes/MTv schedules they've lost their edge. So i can see aimee's (and well my) disgust on the subject. Its a shame to see good bands go the way of the do do just because they're placed into this new genre because someone higher up deems them as being mainstream bands. I cannot find fault in idiots not caring for roots of bands because they are that...idiots. Its also a shame to see so many freaks in love with marilyn Mason when he's nothing more than an Alice Cooper of the 90's. This is a very broad subject and shouldn't be handled in a editorial box but more in a forum. But alas it doesn't matter cause everyone will have their own biased opinions.

I think that everyone here needs to chill. Music is music - it soothes the soul, it saves lives, it speaks to everyone differently. Notice what I said - IT SPEAKS TO EVERYONE DIFFERENTLY. This is the reason that there are different kinds of music. I am proud to say that I have never made fun of someone for the KIND of music they listen to. It's not right. Music is a part of who I am. It has saved my life on numerous occassions. I think you all just need to realize that people are going to listen to what they want to listen to, regardless of whether it's trendy or not. Thanks for taking the time to read this if you actually did.

Annoyed I think your missed the point of this article. Never once did the author claim that she listened to the music to be different or that she was now going to have to find a new type to stay different. You are accusing her of being the posers she is complaining about! She has a good valid point that she makes. And it sounds to me like your just jealous because you can't be that original.

Im the author of this artilce...In response to "ANNOYED", you have a good point:) In a way I should lighten up but in another way I was misleading about my real feelings on this issue. I think it is great if people really DO like the music they've discovered, it is just the "posers" who only follow the trend of "what's hip", without taking into consideration what is behind the scenes...what independent music is about. Im one for keeping it real. Thanx for voicing your opinion! I like to hear it!-aimeE

It seems to me that you're just upset because you're not "original" anymore. Everyone is invading on your territory and you're angry because now you have to struggle to find some other way to be different. Love the music you listen to for what it is, not because other people don't listen to it or because everyone else listens to it. And be happy when other people start listening to your music, it means they're starting to realize what good music is. So what if they jumped on the SKA bandwagon?! They're starting to listen to the music and they love what they hear, you shouldn't be angry at them for discovering good music. Lighten up.
