Zelda

Past and Future

On the original 8-bit nintendo there were two games that made history from the beginning, and it all began with The Legend of Zelda.

Beginning as this little person named Link, you grab a wooden sword and set out on a mission for retrieving Triforce pieces from a total of eight labyrinths. All the while, you are also searching for other much needed items. Once you have gone through the labyrinths you reach Level nine, where the vile Ganon awaits you. With the silver arrow, almost everyone ended the simple enemy and saved the princess.

The second Zelda was also on the Nintendo 8-bit system as well, where you are sent to awake the princess from a sleeping spell by travelling to all the palaces within the realms of Hyrule and sealing them shut with crystals. Much like the original, you also gather items and magic and life throughout the game. Reach the Great Palace and you fight against the Guardian, then you fight your own shadow to seal the fate of Hyrule and awake Princess Zelda.

The third Zelda was designed for the Super Nintendo. You are still the character, Link, and you are awakened by the telepathy of the Princess. You discover that you're plotted against the wizard known as Agahnim. Going through a much more graphically intensified map area, you enter the palace and save the Princess at first, taking her to a nearby church. You then seek out various pendants to acquire the Master sword to defeat the wizard. Once you attain that, you are banished into another world known as the Dark World, where you must rescue maidens then fight against Agahnim once again. You then meet up with Ganon again and fight to get your wish granted from the Triforce.

Zelda has been a continuing saga with each of the nintendo systems, and now once again, Zelda peaks up to be a game for the Nintendo 64 system. Having such inspiration all can hope and watch for what new features and intensified graphics this new game can hold.

The original Zelda was the coolest game of it's type for all time. I remember getting it as a stocking stuffer the same christmas I got my Nintendo system. It took me years to beat that game- mainly because I attacked it in spurts. I'd play really hard for a weak or so, hit a stubling block, and give up. Then, while doing something completly different, the solution would hit and me and the cycle would continue. I remeber so vividly the day I finally won. I knew I was close. I was home sick with some horrable bug and my only entertainment was good old zelda. I tried every weapon on that final boss charector and finally- BAM! CONTACT!!! Then, my excitment swelled. I just knew that something increadably cool would happen next. The summation of my years' labor was at hand. Then, that stupid little ending sequence rolled and then about a hundred japanese names flew by. What a jip I thought. Which brings me to my point about this new zelda. I hope that it's not a jip. The great thing about the original zelda wasn't the amazing graphics, the advanced technology, or anything like that. It was a breakthrought because it was a compelling, engaging, and complex but playable game. I don't really intend to but this game (I don't even own a Nintendo 64), but for the sake of today's gamers, I hope that even though the new zelda has all the great eye candy, it has the original feel and complexity as well.
